MATT’S MATCHUPS 2020 FOOTBALL – STATE FINALS

I posted a 9-3 record (75 percent) in last week’s semistate round, leaving my overall mark at 185-59, good for 76 percent for the year. All times EST.

CLASS 6A

Westfield (12-1) vs. Center Grove (13-0) (7 p.m. Friday): The No. 2 Shamrocks blanked top-ranked Center Grove, 34-0, during the 1959 campaign. Mason Piening has recorded 43 receptions for 946 yards with 12 touchdowns Westfield. Tayven Jackson has gone 105-of-167 for 1,635 yards with 15 touchdowns for the Trojans. Westfield is going after its second state championship, while Center Grove has claimed two state crowns. Matt’s pick: Center Grove 35, Westfield 20.

CLASS 5A

Zionsville (7-5) vs. Indianapolis Cathedral (12-1) (7 p.m. Saturday): The top-ranked Irish posted a 35-21 win over Zionsville in the 2013 sectional semifinals. Colin Price has accounted for 193 carries for 1,240 yards with 10 scores for the Eagles. Camden Jordan has caught 60 passes for 812 yards with 16 touchdowns for Cathedral. Zionsville is trying for its third state championship, while the Irish have captured 12 state titles. Matt’s pick: Indianapolis Cathedral 40, Zionsville 16.

CLASS 4A

Hobart (11-2) vs. Indianapolis Roncalli (12-1) (3 p.m. Friday):  Zach Vode has hauled in 54 receptions for 1,042 yards with nine touchdowns for the No. 7 Brickies. Baron Huebler has scampered 293 times for 2,172 yards with 31 touchdowns for the No. 4 Rebels. Hobart is looking for its fifth state title, while Roncalli has won nine state championships. Matt’s pick: Indianapolis Roncalli 31, Hobart 14.

CLASS 3A

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (12-1) vs. Danville (11-0) (3 p.m. Saturday): The No. 5 Warriors claimed a regional crown in 2017 with a 38-7 win over top-ranked and defending state champion Bishop Chatard. Thomas Coleman has hauled in 53 passes for 812 yards with nine scores for the Trojans. Kale Payne is 138-of-193 for 1,809 yards with 26 scores for Danville. The Trojans looking for their 14th state crown, while Danville is in pursuit of its first state title. Matt’s pick: Bishop Chatard 24, Danville 13.

CLASS 2A

Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (8-6) vs. Western Boone (10-4) (11 a.m. Friday): The Knights downed two-time defending state champion Western Boone, 33-12, in the 1989 semistate final. Sir Hale has rambled 111 times for 804 yards with eight scores for Bishop Luers. Elliott Young has gone 100-of-177 for 1,538 yards with 23 touchdowns and run 58 times for 282 yards with eight scores for the Stars. The Knights have claimed 11 state titles, while Western Boone is looking for its fourth state championship. Matt’s pick: Western Boone 33, Bishop Luers 30.

CLASS 1A

South Adams (13-0) vs. Covenant Christian (14-0) (11 a.m. Saturday): James Arnold has completed 181-of-267 passes for 3,458 yards with 44 touchdowns for the top-ranked Starfires. Micah Wilson ran 101 times for 1,106 yards with 21 touchdowns and caught 11 passes for 335 yards with five scores for the No. 5 Warriors. South Adams and Covenant Christian are both appearing in their first state title game. Matt’s pick: South Adams 42, Covenant Christian 39.
