MATT’S MATCHUPS 2020 FOOTBALL – WEEK FIVE

More improvement was made as I went 11-2 (85 percent) last week. Heading into the second half of the regular season, my overall record is 48-16, which leaves me at 75 percent.

NORTHERN INDIANA CONFERENCE

Jimtown (1-2, 0-1 NIC) at Bremen (3-1, 1-0 NIC): The Jimmies rolled to a 43-7 win over Bremen last season. Johntu Reed hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass in Jimtown’s 10-7 loss at Glenn. Lane Moser returned a fumble for a score in the Lions’ 41-0 blanking of Triton. Matt’s pick: Bremen 30, Jimtown 24.

Knox (2-2) at Glenn (3-1): The Redskins marched past Glenn, 35-7, a year ago. Cade Short ran 16 yards for a touchdown in Knox’s 14-0 win at North Judson. Sam Thomas connected on a 23-yard field goal for the Falcons against Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Knox 35, Glenn 19.

Marian (4-0, 1-0 NIC) at Adams (3-1, 0-1 NIC) (TCU School Field): The top-ranked (Class 3A) Knights slipped by Adams, 15-13, during the 2014 campaign. Malcolm Anderson scampered 14 times for 67 yards and two scores in Marian’s 35-14 win over New Prairie. Chuck Worsham found the end zone twice in the Eagles’ 21-14 loss at Saint Joseph. Matt’s pick: Marian 36, Adams 13.

Penn (2-2) at Elkhart (3-0): The Kingsmen and No. 9 (Class 6A) Elkhart are meeting for the first time on the gridiron at Rice Field. Alec Hardrict returned a punt 65 yards for a score in Penn’s 30-24 win at No. 7 (Class 4A) East Noble. Cameron Wiltfong was 6-of-9 for 128 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions’ 56-7 win over Washington. Matt’s pick: Elkhart 28, Penn 21.

Riley (1-3) at Gary West (1-3): The Wildcats are taking on Gary West for the first time on the football field. Jaylen Rhines had a 14-yard interception return for a touchdown in Riley’s 45-8 win over Clay. Payton Jordan ran for211 yards and four scores in the Cougars’ 46-8 win over Bowman Academy. Matt’s pick: Riley 32, Gary West 29.

Saint Joseph (2-2, 1-0 NIC) at New Prairie (2-2, 0-1 NIC): The Indians are looking to make amends for a 55-28 loss to New Prairie a season ago. Asante Anglin scored a pair of touchdowns for Saint Joseph against Adams. Brandon Kasinger managed 10 tackles for the Cougars against Marian. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 34, Saint Joseph 30.

Washington (0-4, 0-1 NIC) at Clay (1-3, 0-1 NIC): The Panthers cruised to a 40-12 win against Clay last year. Marshawn Lottie had a two-yard scamper for a score for Washington against Elkhart. Brandon Clark romped 11 yards for a touchdown for the Colonials against Riley. Matt’s pick: Washington 12, Clay 7.

NORTHERN LAKES CONFERENCE

Goshen (1-0) at Concord (2-1, 1-1 NLC): The Minutemen blanked Goshen, 45-0, in their previous meeting. Drew Worthman rambled 12 times for 60 yards and two touchdowns in the RedHawks’ 43-6 win at Clay. Tommy Kinsman had a seven-yard scoring run in Concord’s 28-7 win over Wawasee. Matt’s pick: Concord 40, Goshen 14.

Mishawaka (0-3, 0-1 NLC) at Plymouth (0-4, 0-2 NLC): The Cavemen claimed an 18-6 win over Plymouth during the 1934 season. Davonn Parker ran 55 yards for a touchdown and caught a 33-yard pass for another tally in Mishawaka’s 40-32 loss at Warsaw. Devante Garcia came up with five receptions for 40 yards in the Rockies’ 44-0 loss at Northridge. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 37, Plymouth 31.

NorthWood (1-1, 1-0 NLC) at Wawasee (2-2. 0-2 NLC): The Panthers downed Wawasse, 40-10, during the 2019 regular season and 49-3 in the Class 4A sectional opener. Kaden Lone passed for 171 yards and two touchdowns in NorthWood’s 14-6 win over Concord. Zack Smith had four catches for 73 yards and a score for the Warriors against Concord. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 41, Wawasee 18.

Warsaw (3-1, 2-0 NLC) at Northridge (3-0, 2-0 NLC): The Tigers clawed their way to a 28-13 win over Northridge last season. Aaron Greene accounted for two scores for Warsaw against Mishawaka. Logan Hooley threw for 32 yards and ran for 67 yards and three touchdowns for the Raiders against Plymouth. Matt’s pick: Northridge 31, Warsaw 28.

DUNELAND CONFERENCE

Chesterton (2-2. 2-0 DAC) at Valparaiso (2-0, 1-0 DAC): The No. 2 (Class 5A) Vikings earned a 40-6 win against Chesterton last year. Jackson Westmoreland hauled in five passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns in the Trojans’ 45-21 win at LaPorte. Tommy Burbee raced 16 times for 71 yards and a score in Valparaiso’s 37-7 win at LaPorte. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 42, Chesterton 17.

LaPorte (0-4, 0-2 DAC) at Lake Central (1-3, 0-2 DAC): The Slicers managed a 31-14 win over Lake Central a season ago. Collin Bergquist raced for 146 yards and two scores for LaPorte against Chesterton. Aisen Henry managed a 36-yard touchdown reception in the Indians’ 16-7 loss to Crown Point. Matt’s pick: LaPorte 19, Lake Central 16.

Portage (2-2, 1-1 DAC) at Crown Point (2-2, 1-1 DAC): The Bulldogs were a 22-16 winner over Portage a year ago. Mey-Sin Hollowell returned a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown in the Indians’ 58-19 loss to No. 4 (Class 6A) Merrillville. J.J. Johnson’s 14-yard reception for a score lifted Crown Point past Lake Central. Matt’s pick: Crown Point 22, Portage 15.
