MATT’S MATCHUPS 2020 FOOTBALL – WEEK NINE

My chances of reaching the 80 percent mark again took a big hit as I went 9-4 (69 percent) last week. Heading into the final week of the regular season, my overall record is 92-26, which leaves me at 78 percent for the year.

NORTHERN INDIANA CONFERENCE

Bremen (6-2, 3-1 NIC) at Clay (1-7, 0-4 NIC): The Lions roared past Clay, 41-0, a year ago. Grant Kauffman scored a touchdown and had a fumble recovery in Bremen’s 37-7 win over Riley. Jamari Herring scampered 80 yards for a score in the Colonials’ 15-6 loss to Glenn. Matt’s pick: Bremen 44, Clay 6.

Elkhart (6-0, 3-0 NIC) at New Prairie (5-3, 2-2 NIC): The No. 5 (Class 6A) Lions and New Prairie are meeting for the first time on the gridiron. Cameron Wiltfong went 9-of-13 for 144 yards with two touchdowns in Elkhart’s 51-0 win over Adams. Brandon Kasinger ran for 96 yards in the Cougars’ 42-3 loss at Penn. Matt’s pick: Elkhart 33, New Prairie 18.

Penn (4-4, 2-2 NIC) at Adams (4-4, 0-4 NIC) (TCU School Field): The Kingsmen rolled to a 62-32 win over Adams a season ago. Zach Hoskins returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown for Penn against New Prairie. Jeremiah Love rambled 63 yards for a score in the Eagles’ 28-16 win over Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Penn 38, Adams 16.

Riley (3-5, 2-2 NIC) at Jimtown (4-3, 3-1 NIC): The Jimmies cruised to a 42-13 win against Riley last season. Sylvester Orozco found the end zone for the Wildcats against Bremen. Ethan Devol accounted for a pair of touchdowns for Jimtown against Adams. Matt’s pick: Jimtown 44, Riley 10.

Saint Joseph (2-6, 1-3 NIC) at Marian (6-0, 3-0 NIC): The No. 2 (Class 3A) Knights blanked Saint Joseph, 41-0, last year. Walter Wesson came up with a 36-yard touchdown reception in the Indians’ 27-14 loss to Culver Academy. Gavin Stefanek racked up 17 tackles in Marian’s 20-16 win over Penn. Matt’s pick: Marian 40, Saint Joseph 12.

Washington (2-6, 1-3 NIC) at Glenn (4-4, 3-1 NIC): The Falcons clipped Washington, 28-21, in their previous meeting. Christian Johnson took an interception back for a touchdown in the Panthers’ 47-20 win over Gary West. Ty Larkin’s interception helped Glenn slip past Clay. Matt’s pick: Glenn 21, Washington 19.

NORTHERN LAKES CONFERENCE

Concord (4-3, 2-3 NLC) at Warsaw (6-2, 5-1 NLC): The Minutemen downed Warsaw, 34-28, a year ago. Hunter Dutton threw for 394 yards and three touchdowns for the Minutemen in a 55-20 loss to Northridge. Juan Jaramillo romped for 110 yards and two scores in the Tigers’ 22-21 loss at NorthWood. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 30, Concord 27.

Goshen (1-4, 0-3 NLC) at Wawasee (2-6, 0-5 NLC): The Warriors edged Goshen, 28-23, last year. Ruben Foster had a one-yard scoring run in the RedHawks’ 49-7 loss to No. 8 (Class 5A) Harrison (West Lafayette). Parker Young tossed for 219 yards with a touchdown in Wawasee’s 42-7 loss at Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: Wawasee 19, Goshen 13.

Mishawaka (4-3, 4-1 NLC) at Northridge (6-1, 5-1 NLC): The Cavemen and Northridge are playing football for the first time. Connor Addison rambled 16 yards for a score for Mishawaka against Wawasee. Dom Crowder came up with three touchdown runs and a fumble recovery for the Raiders against Concord. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 43, Northridge 39.

DUNELAND CONFERENCE

LaPorte (3-5, 3-3 DAC) at Portage (2-6, 1-5 DAC): The Slicers were a 20-14 winner over Portage last season. Jeremiah Ruiz caught two passes for 36 yards in LaPorte’s 14-13 overtime win against No. 9 (Class 5A) Michigan City. Terrell Craft had 23 carries for 94 yards in the Indians’ 41-7 loss at Valparaiso. Matt’s pick: LaPorte 15, Portage 9.

Merrillville (6-1, 4-0 DAC) at Chesterton (4-3, 4-1 DAC): The No. 7 (Class 6A) Pirates claimed a 27-20 win against Chesterton last year. Paris Hewlett tallied six rushes for 114 yards in Merrillville’s 35-7 win over Lake Central. Ethan Pickering accounted for a pair of scores in the Trojans’ 42-0 win over Lake Central. Matt’s pick: Merrillville 31, Chesterton 21.

Valparaiso (4-0, 3-0 DAC) at Lake Central (1-7. 0-6 DAC): The Indians suffered a 44-14 loss to No. 3 (Class 5A) Valparaiso a season ago. Logan Lockhart was 4-of-11 for 56 yards and two touchdowns for the Vikings against Portage. Xavier Williams rambled 17 times for 95 yards with a score for Lake Central against Merrillville. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 49, Lake Central 8.
