The first week of 2022 began with a 19-3 (86 percent) record. My overall mark is now 127-31, which has me at 80 percent for the season.


Bremen (4-3) at Elkhart Christian (5-2): The Eagles soared to a 59-41 win over Bremen a year ago. Grant Devine tallied three points in the Lions’ 51-31 loss to Washington. Matt Burns netted the game-winning free throw in Elkhart Christian’s 54-52 win over Lakeland Christian. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Christian 44, Bremen 39.

Clay (3-7) at Oregon-Davis (1-6): The Colonials downed Oregon-Davis, 82-70, last year. Miguel Henry’s 17 points were not enough in Clay’s 64-50 loss at Jimtown. Cam Taylor chipped in eight points in the Bobcats’ 39-33 loss to LaCrosse. Matt’s pick: Clay 64, Oregon-Davis 52.

Mishawaka (6-2) at Jimtown (5-5): The Cavemen clubbed Jimtown, 62-52, a season ago. Brendan Williams piled up 21 points in Mishawaka’s 62-47 win over New Prairie. Braxten Rice added 10 points for the Jimmies against Clay. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 63, Jimtown 54.

Warsaw (7-3) at Penn (8-1): The Tigers suffered a 51-48 loss to No. 8 (Class 4A) Penn last season. Drew Heckaman recorded nine points and five rebounds in Warsaw’s 61-47 win at Northridge. Josh Gatete tossed in three points for the Kingsmen in their 74-73 loss to No. 6 (Class 4A) Valparaiso. Matt’s pick: Penn 69, Warsaw 65.


Riley (7-5) at Michigan City (6-4): The Wildcats earned a pair of wins over Michigan City (88-52 and 91-76) during the 2020-21 season. Marvin Schindler contributed 12 points in Riley’s 64-58 win over Guerin Catholic. Jevon France registered 24 points in the Wolves’ 67-61 win over Marquette Catholic. Matt’s pick: Riley 76, Michigan City 73.


Clay (4-7, 0-5 NIC) at Marian (9-2, 3-0 NIC): The No. 5 (Class 3A) Knights posted two victories against Clay (58-34 and 69-33) last year. Ameer Harris tallied 20 points in the Colonials’ 77-59 win over Oregon-Davis. Zion Rhoades ended with four points in Marian’s 65-51 win over Adams. Matt’s pick: Marian 81, Clay 61.


Adams (4-6, 2-2 NIC) at Washington (10-3, 3-2 NIC): The Eagles flew past Washington, 80-56, a year ago. Tommy Snyder came up with 25 points for Adams against Marian. Ty’Shaun Grundy chipped in two points in the Panthers’ 67-35 win at Elkhart Christian. Matt’s pick: Washington 76, Adams 69.

Concord (4-6, 0-2 NLC) at Plymouth (3-9, 0-2 NLC): The Minutemen edged Plymouth, 50-45, last season. Ethan Kavanaugh added eight points in Concord’s 53-32 loss to Goshen. Trey Delp ended with three points in the Pilgrims’ 61-48 loss to Tippecanoe Valley. Matt’s pick: Plymouth 45, Concord 43.

Elkhart (1-7, 1-3 NIC) at Bremen (5-3, 1-2 NIC): The Lions rolled to a 47-31 win over Bremen a season ago. Rodney Gates recorded nine points in Elkhart’s 67-46 loss to Mishawaka. Carson Miller registered 24 points, including the game-winning bucket, in Bremen’s 48-46 overtime win at Elkhart Christian. Matt’s pick: Elkhart 62, Bremen 58.

Glenn (11-0, 5-0 NIC) at Saint Joseph (6-4, 3-1 NIC): The Indians claimed a pair of wins over No. 4 (Class 3A) Glenn (66-51 and 60-56) last year. Noah Dreibelbeis accounted for 10 points in Glenn’s 51-38 win over No. 10 (Class 1A) Triton. Cole Hatkevich finished with 19 points for Saint Joseph in its 73-56 loss to Penn. Matt’s pick: Glenn 60, Saint Joseph 57.

Goshen (9-1, 2-0 NLC) at Warsaw (7-4, 2-0 NLC): The RedHawks dropped a 48-38 decision to Warsaw in their previous meeting. Gage Worthman chipped in 12 points for Goshen against Concord. Tyler Kuhn mustered three points in the Tigers’ 71-59 loss at Penn. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 49, Goshen 46.

Jimtown (5-6, 2-2 NIC) at Penn (9-1, 4-0 NIC): The No. 8 (Class 4A) Kingsmen cruised to an 87-36 win at Jimtown a season ago. Bishop Williams tallied nine points in the Jimmies’ 57-54 loss to Mishawaka. Cole Wojciechowski amassed two points for Penn against Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Penn 75, Jimtown 57.

New Prairie (2-9, 0-5 NIC) at Riley (7-6, 2-3 NIC): The Wildcats came up with an 81-55 win against New Prairie a year ago. Adin Newman scored 12 points for the Cougars against Mishawaka. A.J. Williams chipped in four points in Riley’s 69-45 loss at Michigan City. Matt’s pick: Riley 64, New Prairie 45.

Northridge (3-7, 0-2 NLC) at NorthWood (12-1, 2-0 NLC): The Raiders raced to a 66-58 win over No. 3 (Class 3A) NorthWood last year. Blake Jacobs managed 11 points in Northridge’s 61-47 loss to Warsaw. Cade Brenner scored 21 points for the Panthers against Wawasee. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 70, Northridge 53.


Clay (4-8) at LaPorte (7-5): The Slicers slipped past Clay, 70-64, a season ago. Brad Hicks’ nine points were not enough in the Colonials’ 71-39 loss at Marian. Grant Ott-Large recorded 19 points and eight rebounds in LaPorte’s 69=44 loss at No. 2 (Class 4A) Chesterton. Matt’s pick: LaPorte 59, Clay 53.

Gary 21st Century (8-2) at Adams (4-7): The Eagles were a 67-47 winner over No. 4 (Class 1A) Gary 21st Century last season. Ashton Williamson poured in 33 points in the Cougars’ 83-79 win over Indianapolis Crispus Attucks. Rashad Simpson came up with 16 points for Adams in its 73-70 overtime loss to Washington. Matt’s pick: Gary 21st Century 66. Adams 64.

Plymouth (3-10) at Elkhart (2-7): The Pilgrims dropped a 73-56 contest to Elkhart last year. Coby Walters added three points in Plymouth’s 44-41 loss to Concord. Erick Nocentelli drained six three-pointers and finished with 22 points in the Lions’ 63-50 win at Bremen. Matt’s pick: Elkhart 55, Plymouth 48.

Warsaw (8-4) at Peru (11-0): The Tigers claimed a 61-50 win against No. 7 (Class 3A) Peru during the 2010-11 campaign. Russ Winchester’s 12 points helped Warsaw to a 48-47 win over Goshen. Braxten Robbins accounted for eight points, including the game-winning basket, in the Bengal Tigers’ 53-51 win over Lewis Cass. Matt’s pick: Peru 54, Warsaw 52.

Washington (11-3) at Valparaiso (12-2): The No. 6 (Class 4A) Vikings managed a 50-34 win over Washington a year ago. Marcus Northern tallied 17 points for the Panthers against Adams. Jack Smiley’s 15 points guided Valparaiso to a 76-70 win over Michigan City. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 71, Washington 66.
