MATT’S MATCHUPS 2021-22 HOOPS – WEEK NINE

Things didn’t go so well the second time around as I went 14-5 (74 percent) last week. My overall mark is now 141-36, which keeps me at 80 percent for the season.

TUESDAY

Clay (4-9) at Mishawaka (7-2): The Cavemen edged Clay, 64-63, a season ago. Miguel Henry tallied 17 points in the Colonials’ 67-54 loss at LaPorte. Rasauun Johnson led the way with 14 points in Mishawaka’s 57-54 win at Jintown. Matt’s pick: Mishawka 62, Clay 52.

Elkhart (2-8) at Concord (5-6): The Lions clawed past Concord twice (77-40 and 64-52) a year ago. Jacob Windy ended with 15 points in Elkhart’s 43-42 loss to Plymouth. Malachi Emmons added 11 points for the Minutemen in their 44-41 win at Plymouth. Matt’s pick: Concord 54, Elkhart 47.

Goshen (9-2) at Jimtown (5-7): The RedHawks claimed a 49-32 win over Jimtown last season. Deecon Hill came up with seven points in Goshen’s 48-47 loss to Warsaw. Jackson Clopton chipped in three points in the Jimmies’ 62-36 loss to No. 8 (Class 4A) Penn. Matt’s pick: Goshen 43, Jimtown 34.

Marian (10-2) at Culver Academy (7-2): The Eagles went to overtime to earn a 59-54 win over No. 3 (Class 3A) Marian during the 2019-20 campaign. Richard Brooks scored 16 points in the Knights’ 71-39 win over Clay. Cooper Farrall ended with 30 points in Culver Academy’s 54-52 loss to No. 3 (Class 4A) Westfield. Matt’s pick: Culver Academy 59, Marian 56.

Penn (10-1) at Northridge (3-8): The No. 8 (Class 4A) Kingsmen downed Northridge, 45-40, in the 2021 Class 4A Elkhart Sectional opener, while the Raiders posted a 72-64 win at Penn during the 2020-21 regular season. Ethan Good netted three points for Penn against Jimtown. Blake Jacobs managed 12 points in the Raiders’ 49-48 loss to No. 1 (Class 3A) NorthWood. Matt’s pick: Penn 66, Northridge 51.

Saint Joseph (6-5) at NorthWood (13-1): The Indians slipped past No. 1 (Class 3A) NorthWood, 58-52, last year. Jack Quinn registered eight points for Saint Joseph in its 59-44 loss to No. 2 (Class 3A) Glenn. Cooper Wiens recorded 11 points for the Panthers against Northridge. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 49, Saint Joseph 40.

TCU BI-COUNTY TOURNAMENT

Bremen (5-4) at Argos (10-1): The Lions opened the 2021-22 season with a 52-35 win over No. 10 (Class 1A) Argos on November 24. Ethan Nunemaker’s nine points were not enough in Bremen’s 63-50 loss to Elkhart. Dylan Kindig poured in 21 points in the Dragons’ 58-39 win over Oregon-Davis. Matt’s pick: Argos 45, Bremen 42.

Glenn (12-0) at Culver (3-8): The No. 2 (Class 3A) Falcons soared to a 65-40 win over Culver during the 2014-15 campaign. Noah Dreibelbeis accounted for 13 points for Glenn against Saint Joseph. Emiliano Ortiz scored nine points in the Cavaliers’ 60-34 loss to No. 8 (Class 1A) Triton. Matt’s pick: Glenn 61, Culver 41.

New Prairie (2-10) at Oregon-Davis (1-9): The Cougars roared to a 79-63 win over Oregon-Davis on December 14. Adin Newman managed 11 points in New Prairie’s 48-45 loss to Riley. Connor Danford mustered seven points for the Bobcats against Argos. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 62, Oregon-Davis 48.

Triton (7-2) at LaVille (1-6): The No. 8 (Class 1A) Trojans got past LaVille, 44-43, a season ago. Tyson Yates accounted for 16 points for Triton against Culver. Owen Smith tallied 12 points in the Lancers’ 45-40 loss to Elkhart Christian. Matt’s pick: Triton 50, LaVille 41.

THURSDAY

Riley (8-6, 3-3 NIC) at Clay (4-10, 0-6 NIC): The Wildcats cruised to a 78-44 win against Clay last season. A.J. Williams chipped in 10 points in Riley’s 58-44 win over Plymouth, Ameer Harris tossed in 25 points in the Colonials’ 52-49 loss at Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: Riley 75. Clay 63.

Washington (11-4, 4-2 NIC) at Jimtown (6-7, 2-3 NIC): The Panthers rolled to a pair of victories over Jimtown (73-37 and 57-39) a year ago. Isaiah Holland’s two points was not enough in Washington’s 64-47 loss to No. 4 (Class 4A) Valparaiso. Bishop Williams’ eight points lifted the Jimmies to a 48-45 win over Goshen. Matt’s pick: Washington 72, Jimtown 58.

FRIDAY

NorthWood (14-1. 3-0 NLC) at Goshen (9-3, 2-1 NLC): The No. 1 (Class 3A) Panthers needed two overtimes to post a 62-56 win over Goshen last year. Drew Hogan accounted for 14 points for the RedHawks against Jimtown. Chaz Yoder came up with eight points in NorthWood’s 68-49 win over Saint Joseph. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 57, Goshen 50.

Penn (11-1, 5-0 NIC) at Marian (11-2, 4-0 NIC): The No. 3 (Class 3A) Knights had to go to overtime to escape with a 59-56 win over No. 8 (Class 4A) Penn a season ago. Cole Wojciechowski chipped in 11 points in the Kingsmen’s 66-57 overtime win at Northridge. Deaglan Sullivan poured in 21 points in Marian’s 60-42 win at Culver Academy. Matt’s pick: Penn 68, Marian 66.

Saint Joseph (6-6, 3-2 NIC) at Elkhart (2-9, 2-3 NIC): The Indians came away with an 80-66 win against Elkhart in their previous meeting. Jayce Lee mustered five points for Saint Joseph against NorthWood. Josh Hoogenboom ended with two points in the Lions’ 47-45 loss to Concord. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 59, Elkhart 51.

Warsaw (9-4. 3-0 NLC) at Concord (6-6, 1-2 NLC): The Minutemen surprised Warsaw, 37-33, a year ago. Drew Heckaman netted 19 points in the Tigers’ 51-40 win at No. 10 (Class 3A) Peru. Zaven Koltookian’s nine points lifted Concord to a 44-41 win at Plymouth. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 51, Concord 47.

Wawasee (4-7, 0-2 NLC) at Plymouth (4-10, 0-3 NLC): The Warriors were a 46-39 winner over Plymouth last season. Myles Everingham ended with five points in Wawasee’s 47-35 loss to NorthWood. Tanner Feece scored five points for the Pilgrims against Elkhart. Matt’s pick: Plymouth 41, Wawasee 39.

TCU BI-COUNTY TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS (LAVILLE’S DALE E. COX GYMNASIUM)

Glenn (13-0) vs. New Prairie (3-10): The No. 2 (Class 3A) Falcons soared to 69-36 win over New Prairie on January 6. Silas Kaser tallied 18 points in Glenn’s 64-46 win over Culver. Cade Skornog netted 12 points in the Cougars’ 53-40 win over Oregon-Davis. Matt’s pick: Glenn 67, New Prairie 53.

Bremen (6-4) vs. Triton (8-2): The No. 7 (Class 1A) Trojans cruised to a 73-42 win against Bremen a year ago. Trevor Devine contributed six points in the Lions’ 66-64 four-overtime win over Argos. Cole Shively scored 18 points in Triton’s 60-35 win over LaVille. Matt’s pick: Triton 48, Bremen 43.

CONSOLATION ROUND (LAVILLE’S AUXILLARY GYM)

Argos (10-2) vs. LaVille (1-7): The No. 10 (Class 1A) Dragons rolled to a 55-25 win over LaVille on December 7. J.J. Morris recorded 23 points for Argos against Bremen. Collin Czarnecki led the Lancers with 14 points against Triton. Matt’s pick: Argos 61, LaVille 45.

SATURDAY

Elkhart (2-10) at Fort Wayne Wayne (1-9): The Generals dropped a 75-62 contest to Elkhart during the 2020-21 season. Cam’Ron Daniels managed 14 points for the Lions in their 78-65 loss to Saint Joseph. H.J. Dillard scored 17 points for Fort Wayne Wayne in its 84-68 loss to Fort Wayne Northrop. Matt’s pick: Elkhart 72, Fort Wayne Wayne 69.

Mishawaka (8-2, 2-0 NLC) at Northridge (3-9, 0-3 NLC): The Cavemen clubbed Northridge, 57-45, a season ago. Arthur Jones managed 13 points for Mishawaka against Clay. Jordan Weaver added two points for the Raiders against Penn. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 62, Northridge 55.

Valparaiso (14-2) at Warsaw (9-5): The No. 5 (Class 4A) Vikings posted a 61-52 win over Warsaw last year. Mason Jones accounted for 23 points, six rebounds, and three assists in Valparaiso’s 59-48 win at Lake Central. Jaxson Gould’s 28 points were not enough for the Tigers in their 58-56 loss to Concord. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 64, Warsaw 60.

Glenn (14-0) vs. Triton (9-2): The No. 2 (Class 3A) Falcons flew past No. 7 (Class 1A) Triton, 51-38, on January 7. Joe Chrapliwy came up with three points in Glenn’s 70-20 win over New Prairie. Ashton Oviedo added 10 points in the Trojans’ 53-49 win over Bremen. Matt’s pick: Glenn 74, Triton 57.
