MATT’S MATCHUPS 2021 FOOTBALL – WEEK NINE

After recording a perfect mark (16-0) the previous week, I slipped to 11-3 (79 percent). Heading into the final week of the regular season, my overall record is now 105-25; which keeps me at 81 percent.

NORTHERN INDIANA CONFERENCE

Adams (3-5. 1-3 NIC) at Penn (3-5. 3-1 NIC): The Kingsmen rolled to a 53-14 win against Adams in the 2020 campaign. Phoenix Clark rambled 14 yards for a touchdown in the Eagles’ 55-27 loss at Jimtown. Ryne Buckley was 10-of-24 for 115 yards with a score in Penn’s 17-7 loss at New Prairie. Matt’s pick: Penn 40, Adams 19.

Clay (0-7, 0-3 NIC) at Bremen (5-3, 3-1 NIC): The Lions cruised to a 54-0 win over Clay in their previous meeting. Keon Williams had a 60-yard scoring run in the Colonials’ 69-8 loss to Jimtown, Reece Greene returned a fumble 18 yards for a touchdown in Bremen’s 48-21 win against Riley. Matt’s pick: Bremen 49, Clay 6.

Glenn (3-4, 1-2 NIC) at Washington (3-3. 1-2 NIC): (TCU School Field): The Panthers clawed past Glenn, 35-13, a season ago. Nathan Creed tallied three receptions for 21 yards in the Falcons’ 14-7 loss to LaVille. Ty’shaun Grundy recorded five rushes for 133 yards and three scores in Washington’s 35-0 win over Clay. Matt’s pick: Glenn 23, Washington 19.

Jimtown (6-2. 4-0 NIC) at Riley (1-4. 1-2 NIC) (Jackson Field): The Jimmies claimed a 31-6 win against Riley last year. Tysen House tossed for 65 yards and a score for Jimtown against Adams. Ethan Witz recorded six catches for 66 yards for the Wildcats against Bremen. Matt’s pick: Jimtown 47, Riley 15.

Marian (5-3, 3-1 NIC) at Saint Joseph (2-6, 0-4 NIC): The Knights blanked Saint Joseph, 48-0, last season. Kapafule Lusanga ran 24 times for 99 yards with a touchdown in Marian’s 24-19 win over Elkhart. Jacob Deahl drilled a 33-yard field goal in the Indians’ 7-3 loss to Culver Academy. Matt’s pick: Marian 36, Saint Joseph 14.

New Prairie (7-1, 3-1 NIC) at Elkhart (4-4, 2-2 NIC): The No. 9 (Class 4A) Cougars suffered a 28-7 loss to Elkhart a year ago. Noah Mungia ran 14 times for 73 yards for New Prairie against Penn. Michael Granzotto came up with an 86-yard reception for a score for the Wolves against Marian. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 30, Elkhart 24.

NORTHERN LAKES CONFERENCE

Northridge (5-3, 3-3 NLC) at Mishawaka (6-2, 4-2 NLC): The No. 8 (Class 5A) Cavemen clubbed Northridge, 41-21, last season. Tagg Gott threw a 57-yard touchdown pass and ran for 72 yards in the Raiders’ 40-7 loss to Concord. Owen Walters tallied 77 yards on the ground with a score in Mishawaka’s 42-7 win over Wawasee. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 35, Northridge 13.

Plymouth (0-8, 0-6 NLC) at NorthWood (4-4, 3-3 NLC): The Rockies dropped a 40-20 decision to NorthWood in the 2019 season. Michael Norris registered nine tackles in Plymouth’s 28-14 loss to Goshen. Luke Miller raced 15 times for 58 yards in the Panthers’ 42-24 loss to Warsaw. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 41, Plymouth 10.

Warsaw (7-1, 6-0 NLC) at Concord (7-1, 6-0 NLC): The No. 9 (Class 6A) Tigers downed No. 7 (Class 5A) Concord, 35-17, a season ago. Julius Jones rambled 17 times for 73 yards and two scores for Warsaw against NorthWood. Hunter Dutton went 15-of-27 for 140 yards with three touchdowns for the Minutemen against Concord. Matt’s pick: Concord 33, Warsaw 30.

Wawasee (1-7, 1-5 NLC) at Goshen (3-5, 1-5 NLC): The Warriors marched past Goshen, 37-21, a year ago. Brandon Kelly came up with nine rushes for 30 yards for Wawasee against Mishawaka. Tyler Clark caught two passes for 25 yards for the RedHawks against Plymouth. Matt’s pick: Goshen 27, Wawasee 8.

DUNELAND CONFERENCE

Chesterton (6-2, 4-2 DAC) at Merrillville (8-0, 6-0 DAC): The No. 3 (Class 6A) Pirates posted a 34-10 win over Chesterton last year. Chris Mullen accounted for a six-yard scoring run in the Trojans’ 14-7 loss to Crown Point. Phillip Roche returned a fumble 65 yards for a touchdown in Merrillville’s 34-7 win over Lake Central. Matt’s pick: Merrillville 38, Chesterton 14.

Lake Central (3-5, 1-5 DAC) at Valparaiso (7-1, 5-1 DAC): The Indians are looking to make amends for a 44-17 loss to No. 4 (Class 5A) Valparaiso last season. Xavier Williams registered 25 rushes for 99 yards with a score for Lake Central against Merrillville. Nick Nowarita accounted for 32 yards with a touchdown on three carries in the Vikings’ 38-0 win over Portage. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 45, Lake Central 12.

Michigan City (5-3, 3-3 DAC) at Crown Point (5-3, 4-2 DAC): The Bulldogs edged No. 10 (Class 5A) Michigan City, 28-21, in the 2019 season. Tyler Bush was 12-of-18 for 266 yards with three scores in the Wolves’ 39-0 win over LaPorte. Elijah Tiawhan ran 39 yards for a touchdown for Crown Point against Chesterton. Matt’s pick: Michigan City 32, Crown Point 26.

Portage (1-7, 0-6 DAC) at LaPorte (2-6, 1-5 DAC): The Indians needed overtime to earn a 34-28 win against LaPorte in their last matchup. Colton Wilkie registered two rushes for 35 yards for Portage against Valparaiso. Colin Bergquist racked up 17 carries for 50 yards for the Slicers against Michigan City. Matt’s pick: LaPorte 19, Portage 16.
