MATT’S MATCHUPS – 2022 FOOTBALL – STATE FINALS

My hopes of remaining over 80 percent for the season took a big hit as I went 5-7 (42 percent) last week. Heading into the final weekend, my overall mark is 181-48, which leaves me at 79 percent for the season.

CLASS 1A

Adams Central (14-0) vs. Indianapolis Lutheran (14-0) (11 a.m., Saturday): The top-ranked Saints claimed the state title a year ago with a 34-28 win over No. 2 Adams Central. DeVuan Jones hauled in three receptions for 108 yards with a touchdown in Lutheran’s 28-7 win over No. 3 North Decatur. Keegan Bluhm raced 19 times for 139 yards with a score in the Flying Jets’ 35-0 blanking of No. 4 North Judson. Matt’s pick: Indianapolis Lutheran 27, Adams Central 13.

CLASS 2A

Andrean (10-3) vs. Evansville Mater Dei (11-3) (11 a.m., Friday): The No. 5 59ers downed No. 6 Evansville Mater Dei, 21-9, in last year’s title affair. Billy Henry went 5-of-9 for 59 yards with a touchdown in Andrean’s 48-29 win over Fort Wayne Bishop Luers. Joey Pierre scampered 28 times for 181 yards with a score in the Wildcats’ 51-28 win against No. 1 Linton-Stockton. Matt’s pick: Andrean 21, Evansville Mater Dei 17.

CLASS 3A

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (10-4) vs. Lawrenceburg (13-1) (3 p.m., Saturday): Colin Guy caught three passes for 34 yards with a score in the No. 6 Trojans’ 21-3 decision over top-ranked West Lafayette. Logan Ahaus was 3-of-6 for 91 yards with a touchdown in the No. 9 Tigers’ 35-7 win against Monrovia. Matt’s pick: Bishop Chatard 33, Lawrenceburg 14.

CLASS 4A

New Prairie (13-1) vs. East Central (12-2) (3 p.m., Friday): Noah Mungia ran 15 times for 71 yards in the No. 6 Cougars’ 10-9 win at No. 7 Kokomo. Ryan Brotherton recorded 18 carries for 69 yards in the No. 4 Trojans’ 24-21 overtime win over No. 2 Indianapolis Roncalli. Matt’s pick: East Central 24, New Prairie 20.

CLASS 5A

Valparaiso (10-3) vs. Whiteland (12-1) (7 p.m., Saturday): Justin Clark rambled eight times for 20 yards with a touchdown and completed 1-of-5 for four yards in the No. 9 Vikings’ 22-21 overtime win against No. 1 Fort Wayne Snider. Slate Valentine carried the ball 14 times for 82 yards with two scores for the No. 2 Warriors in their 21-7 win at Castle. Matt’s pick: Whiteland 30, Valparaiso 18.

CLASS 6A

Carroll (Fort Wayne) (13-0) vs. Center Grove (11-2) (7 p.m., Friday): Braden Steely tallied 22 carries for 64 yards with two scores in the No. 5 Chargers’ 21-15 victory against top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern. Jalen Thompson ran 18 times for 85 yards in the No. 4 Trojans’ 33-10 win over No. 2 Indianapolis Cathedral. Matt’s pick: Center Grove 25, Carroll (Fort Wayne) 19.
