The holidays started on a decent note as I went 18-5 (78 percent) last week. Heading into the last week o 2019, my overall record is 66-29, which has me at 69 percent for the season.


Adams (7-0) vs. Franklin Central (4-1) (Kokomo Tournament): The No. 10 (Class 4A) Eagles posted an 82-78 win over Franklin Central during the 2016-17 campaign. Quentez Columbus chipped in 19 points for Adams in its 68-47 win over LaPorte. Javon Small had 17 points in the Flashes’ 63-54 win over New Palestine, Matt’s pick: Adams 74, Franklin Central 70.

Andrean (3-4) vs. Northridge (4-2) (Noblesville Tournament): The defending Class 2A state champion 59ers earned a 64-57 win over Northridge last year. Nick Flesher accounted for 17 points in Andrean’s 70-62 win over Kankakee Valley. Alex Stauffer racked up 22 points in the Raiders’ 73-38 win over Goshen. Matt’s pick:  Northridge 60, Andrean 57.

Central Noble (4-1) at Wawasee (3-3): The Warriors earned a 70-62 win over Central Noble last season. Connor Esssgian netted 20 points in the Cougars’ 42-36 win over West Noble. Ethan Hardy finished with eight points in Wawasee’s 54-36 loss to Warsaw. Matt’s pick: Central Noble 49, Wawasee 45.

Clay (2-5, 0-3 NIC)) at Glenn (5-2, 1-2 NIC): The Falcons soared to a 72-60 win over Clay a year ago. Robert Allen’s 17 points were not enough for the Colonials in their 57-55 loss at New Prairie. Rob Porter racked up 13 points in Glenn’s 43-35 win over LaVille. Matt’s pick: Glenn 58, Clay 51.

East Noble (0-2) vs. Goshen (5-1) (Goshen Tournament): The Knights slipped by Goshen, 57-55, in the 2017-18 season. Brooks Miller had eight points for East Noble against Columbia City. Zach Barker recorded nine points for the Redhawks against Northridge. Matt’s pick: Goshen 47, East Noble 41.

Fairfield (2-5) vs. Elkhart Central (1-4) (Goshen Tournament): The Blazers suffered a 51-41 loss to Fairfield in the 2017-18 campaign. Dalton Cripe was held to four points in the Falcons’ 51-26 loss to Jimtown. Donovan Johnson had five points in Elkhart Central’s 49-41 win at Glenn. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Central 63, Fairfield 52.

NorthWood (6-2) at Columbia City (2-5): The Eagles soared to a 64-54 win over NorthWood a season ago. Ben Vincent was limited to five points for the Panthers against Plymouth. Columbia City scored 16 points in the second quarter of its 53-45 win over East Noble. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 65, Columbia City 58.

Riley (2-5) at Plymouth (3-4): The Wildcats clawed past Plymouth, 73-55, a year ago. Blake Wesley tallied 29 points in Riley’s 63-50 loss to Adams. Adam Hunter came up with 11 points in the Pilgrims’ 52-47 win over NorthWood. Matt’s pick: Riley 71, Plymouth 61.

Washington (3-5) vs. Connersville (7-0) (Kokomo Tournament): The Panthers and No. 3 (Class 3A) Connersville are meeting for the first time on the hardwood. Jylen Petty contributed 12 points in Washington’s 75-62 loss at Penn. Ethan Smith netted 16 points in the Spartans’ 74-50 win over South Dearborn. Matt’s pick: Connersville 80, Washington 71.


Adams (8-0) vs. Kokomo (4-4) (Kokomo Tournament): The Eagles and Kokomo are playing basketball for the first time. Lynn King scored nine points in Adams’ 74-67 win over Franklin Central. Bobby Wonnell had 15 points in the Wildkats’ 65-58 win over Eastern (Greentown). Matt’s pick: Adams 77, Kokomo 68.

Adams (9-0) vs. Jeffersonville (5-3) (Kokomo Tournament): Matt’s pick: Adams 73, Jeffersonville 68.

Central Noble (4-2) at Bremen (2-4): The Cougars clawed past Bremen, 63-54, last year. Sawyer Yoder racked up 15 points in Central Noble’s 63-56 loss to Wawasee. Tony Harding netted six points in the Lions’ 63-55 loss at Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: Bremen 40, Central Noble 39.

Elkhart Central (2-4) vs. Goshen (6-1) (Goshen Tournament): The RedHawks rallied for a 40-38 win over Elkhart Central on December 3. Luke Teich contributed eight points in the Blazers’ 37-34 win over Faiirfield. Quinn Bechtel finished with three points in Goshen’s 50-45 win over East Noble. Matt’s pick: Goshen 46, Elkhart Central 44.

Elkhart Memorial (4-3) at Penn (3-3): The Chargers used a last-season shot to edge Penn, 78-76, last season. Damarion Anderson scored 11 points in Elkhart Memorial’s 74-69 loss to Valparaiso. Derek Derda tallied 28 points in the Kingsmen’s 85-77 overtime loss at Michigan City. Matt’s pick: Penn 67, Elkhart Memorial 62.

Fairfield (2-6) vs. East Noble (0-3) (Goshen Tournament): The Knights earned a 57-40 win over Fairfield last year. Owen Miller ended up with four points for the Falcons against Elkhart Central. Hayden Jones’ 25 points were not enough for East Noble against Goshen. Matt’s pick: Fairfield 43, East Noble 40.

Fort Wayne Blackhawk (6-1) vs. Northridge (5-2) (Noblesville Tournament): The No. 2 (Class 2A) Braves and Northridge are playing basketball for the first time. Caleb Furst’s 22 points lifted Blackhawk to a 67-56 win over Chesterton. Sam Smith poured in 10 points in the Raiders’ 50-45 overtime win over Andrean. Matt’s pick: Blackhawk 69, Northridge 60.

LaPorte (4-3) vs. Saint Joseph (5-1) (Logansport Tournament): The Slicers cruised to an 80-47 win at Saint Joseph during the 2002-03 season. Zach Bragg had 10 points in LaPorte’s 74-44 win over Knox. Adam O’Dell finished with nine points in the Indians’ 68-59 win over Leo. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 61, LaPorte 51.

Northridge (5-3) vs. Noblesville (4-6) (Noblesville Tournament): Matt’s pick: Northridge 50, Noblesville 47.

Twin Lakes (5-2) vs. Saint Joseph (5-1) (Logansport Tournament): The Indians slipped past Twin Lakes, 62-58, a season ago. Caden Harker ended up with 13 points in the Indians’ 83-70 win over North White. Jake O’Dell managed two points for Saint Joseph against Leo. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 71, Twin Lakes 65.

Washington (4-5) vs. Jeffersonville (4-3) (Kokomo Tournament): The Red Devils claimed a 69-61 win over Washington during the 2015-16 campaign. The Panthers rallied to upend Connersville, 49-47. Tre Coleman chipped in 15 points in Jeffersonville’s 53-45 win over Valparaiso. Matt’s pick: Jeffersonville 51, Washington 49.

Washington (4-6) vs. Kokomo (4-5) (Kokomo Tournament): Matt’s pick: Kokomo 62, Washington 59.


Edwardsburg (3-1) at Mishawaka (2-3): The Cavemen claimed a 46-40 win against Edwardsburg in their previous meeting. Colby Sidenbender tallied 17 points in the Eddies’ 56-46 win over Three Rivers. Nick Hoopingarner netted 15 points for Mishawaka against Bremen. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 51, Edwardsburg 49.
