MATT’S MATCHUPS HOOPS 19-20 VOLUME NINE

More progress was made as I went 15-4 (79 percent) last week. My overall record is now 125-49, which has me at 72 percent for the season.

JANUARY 21

Elkhart Central (5-5) at Concord (0-9): The Blazers clamed a 54-43 win over Concord a year ago. Ty Windy finished with six points in Elkhart Central’s 63-50 win over Bremen. Griffin Swartout had two points for the Minutemen in their 52-44 setback at Plymouth. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Central 62, Concord 44.

Goshen (7-4) at Jimtown (8-4): The Jimmies suffered a 59-45 loss to Goshen a season ago. Blake Wiess was held to just two points in the RedHawks’ 49-39 loss at Warsaw. Hunter Konrath’s two points helped Jimtown to a 57-49 win over Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: Jimtown 51, Goshen 48.

Marian (8-2) at Culver Academy (7-4): The Eagles downed No. 5 Marian, 52-41, last season to win a Class 3A sectional crown. Dar’e’on Thornton finished with four points in the Knights’ 50-48 win over No. 7 (Class 3A) Saint Joseph. Nick Hittle scored 14 points in Culver Academy’s 70-63 win over Saint Joseph. Matt’s pick: Culver Academy 74, Marian 70.

Penn (6-5) at Northridge (7-5): The Kingsmen held on for a 74-72 win over Northridge last year to capture the Class 4A Michigan City regional title. Tobias Patton ended with five points in Penn’s 51-46 win at New Prairie. Alex Stauffer tallied 14 points in the Raiders’ 70-56 win at NorthWood. Matt’s pick: Northridge 63, Penn 59.

Riley (6-5) at Elkhart Memorial (7-6): The Wildcats slipped by Elkhart Memorial, 59-55, in their previous meeting. Tyson Lee scored six points in Riley’s 55-47 win over Elkhart Central. James Peters managed two points in the Chargers’ 69-62 win over LaVille. Matt’s pick: Riley 68, Elkhart Memorial 64.

TCU BI-COUNTY TOURNAMENT

New Prairie (6-5) at Argos (7-5): The Cougars were a 52-38 winner over Argos in the 2015-16 campaign. Hunter Smith recorded seven points for New Prairie against Penn. J.J. Morris registered 11 points in the Dragons’ 60-39 win over Oregon-Davis. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 46, Argos 43.

Culver (1-11) at Bremen (3-8): The Lions clawed past Culver, 80-32, last season. Jalen King contributed seven points in the Cavaliers’ 65-28 loss to Triton. Connor Hundt had four points for Bremen against Elkhart Central. Matt’s pick: Bremen 44, Culver 33.

Glenn (9-3) at Oregon-Davis (1-9): The Falcons soared to a 75-26 win over Oregon-Davis on December 7. Jack Porter ended with 11 points in Glenn’s 48-40 win at Knox. Connor Danford racked up eight points in the Bobcats’ 67-34 loss to Winamac. Matt’s pick: Glenn 65, Oregon-Davis 48.

Triton (6-4) at LaVille (6-4): The Lancers recorded a 49-34 win over Triton last year. Ashton Oviedo accounted for 16 points for the Trojans against Culver. Austin Dove’s six points were not enough for LaVille against Elkhart Memorial. Matt’s pick: LaVille 50, Triton 47.

JANUARY 24

Clay (2-9, 0-6 NIC) at Mishawaka (5-6, 1-4 NIC): The Colonials posted a 66-52 win over Mishawaka last year. Tomias Hunt had seven points in Clay’s 89-51 loss to Saint Joseph. Caleb Williams finished with 12 points for the Cavemen against Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 71, Clay 57.

Jimtown (9-4, 3-3 NIC) at Riley (6-6, 3-2 NIC): The Wildcats came up with a 57-50 win over Jimtown a year ago. Brayden Rice netted 15 points, including the game-winning bucket, in the Jimmies’ 43-42 win over Goshen. Damarion Anderson recorded 10 points in Riley’s 81-68 loss to Elkhart Memorial. Matt’s pick: Riley 66, Jimtown 62.

NorthWood (9-4, 1-2 NLC) at Goshen (7-5, 1-2 NLC): The Panthers clawed their way to a 52-43 win over Goshen a season ago. Ian Raasch tallied four points for NorthWood against Northridge. Quinn Bechtel finished with three points for the RedHawks against Jimtown. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 52, Goshen 48.

Penn (6-6, 4-1 NIC) at Saint Joseph (9-3, 4-1 NIC): The Indians suffered a 72-53 loss at Penn last season. Casey Shultz ended with two points in the Kingsmen’s 57-55 loss at Northridge. John Driscoll scored two points in Saint Joseph’s 70-63 loss to Culver Academy. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 72, Penn 63.

Warsaw (9-3, 2-1 NLC) at Concord (1-9, 0-3 NLC): The Tigers were a 64-25 winner over Concord in their previous meeting. Jackson Dawson contributed six points for Warsaw against Goshen. Jack D’Arcy’s six points lifted the Minutemen to a 47-43 win over Elkhart Central. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 61, Concord 46.

Wawasee (7-5, 0-3 NLC) at Plymouth (6-8, 3-0 NLC): The Warriors came up on the short end of a 56-47 decision to Plymouth in the 2018-19 season. Jack Stover chipped in nine points in Wawasee’s 59-51 loss to Elkhart Memorial. Owen Yoder registered two points for the Pilgrims against Concord. Matt’s pick: Plymouth 59, Wawasee 50.

CONSOLATION ROUND

Argos (7-6) vs. Culver (1-12): The Dragons marched past Culver, 44-35, in the 2019 Class 1A sectional opener.  Sam Manokiwski amassed 10 points in Argos’ 61-37 loss to New Prairie. The Cavaliers scored just two points in the fourth quarter of their 58-15 loss to Bremen. Matt’s pick: Argos 60, Culver 40.

Oregon-Davis (1-10) vs. Triton (6-5): The Trojans posted a 49-30 win against Oregon-Davis on November 27. Cam Taylor mustered two points in the Bobcats’ 79-13 loss to Glenn. Keagan Westafer provided eight points in Triton’s 53-34 loss to LaVille. Matt’s pick: Triton 49, Oregon-Davis 29.

SEMIFINALG

New Prairie (7-5) vs. Bremen (4-8): The Lions roared to a 51-43 win against New Prairie in their last matchup. Chase Ketterer poured in 14 points for the Cougars against Argos. Tony Hardin’s seven points paved the way for Bremen against Culver. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 45, Bremen 34.

Glenn (10-3) vs. LaVille (7-4): The Falcons flew past LaVille, 44-35, on December 21. Noah Abrell scored two points for Glenn against Oregon-Davis. Connor Wiexzorek added seven points for the Lancers against Triton. Matt’s pick: Glenn 56, LaVille 51.

JANUARY 25

Adams (13-1) at Chesterton (14-1): The No. 5 (Class 4A) Eagles and Chesterton  are meeting for the first time on the basketball court. Lynn King came up with seven points in Adams’ 79-60 win over Washington. Jake Wadding tallied 12 points in the Trojans’ 61-41 win over Crown Point. Matt’s pick: Chesterton 80, Adams 77.

Elkhart Memorial (7-6, 2-1 NLC) at Northridge (8-5, 3-0 NLC): The Chargers earned a 63-52 win over Northridge a year ago. D’Arjon Lewis managed 18 points for Elkhart Memorial against Riley. Drew Gayler accounted for 11 points for the Raiders against Penn. Matt’s pick: Northridge 60, Elkhart Memorial 59.

New Prairie (8-5) vs. Glenn (11-3) (TCU Bi-County tournament championship): The Falcons posted a 52-43 win over New Prairie last season. Rylan McBride netted 13 points in the Cougars’ 54-41 win over Bremen. Khori Barker poured in 11 points in Glenn’s 54-46 win over LaVille. Matt’s pick: Glenn 54, New Prairie 51.

Riley (7-6) vs. Lighthouse CPA (2-10) (Culver Academy Tournament): This marks the first meeting on the hardwood between Riley and the Lions,. Phillip Robles recorded 13 points in the Wildcats’ 58-50 win over Jimtown. Davarius Stewart amassed 20 points in Lighthouse’s 52-44 loss to Wawasee. Matt’s pick: Riley 81, Lighthouse CPA 63.

Riley (8-6) vs. Culver Academy (9-4) (Culver Academy Tournament): Matt’s pick: Culver Academy 72, Riley 60.
