NAIA Names Gerig as National Special Teams Player of the Week

KANSAS CITY – One day after being named the Special Teams Player of the Week for the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League, Tyler Gerig was touted as the NAIA National Special Teams Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Gerig narrowed Taylor’s deficit to six points in the third quarter with a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown and closed the contest averaging 47.0 yards per punt return. The senior also scooped up a fumble and ran it back 96 yards for a touchdown nearly five minutes earlier to ignite the Trojan rally.

The NAIA weekly award is the second for a Taylor student-athlete in the past two weeks, following Samantha Korn’s NAIA National Defensive Player-of-the-Week attention with the volleyball program.

Gerig and Taylor (2-2) will open MSFA Mideast League play on Saturday at 4:00 pm at No. 23 Siena Heights (4-0, 1-0 MSFA).
