No. 15 Grace opens season with dominant victory

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Three players scored in the season opener as Grace’s women’s soccer team handled Rochester 3-0 on Monday.

Joana Schimmel, Cassidy Wasson and Hannah Tkacz each found the back of the net for the NAIA No. 15-ranked Lady Lancers (1-0).

Grace controlled every aspect of Monday’s match, owning a 32-1 shot advantage. The Lady Lancers had the majority of possession and took 20 shots on goal.

After a number of dangerous possessions to start the game, Grace opened its scoring for the season in the 18th minute. JJ Aalbue placed a perfectly weighted pass across the center of the goal, and Schimmel beat her defender and poked in a shot past the goalkeeper.

Eight minutes later, Grace’s pressure caused another goal. After a lengthy buildup, Rochester fouled Corinne Villalobos in the penalty box.

Wasson stepped up and scored the ensuing PK for a 2-0 lead.

Grace’s 2-0 lead remained until halftime. The Lady Lancers outshot the Warriors 15-0 in the first half.

The Warriors (0-1) finally tried a shot early in the second half, but that was the only attempt of the evening for the visitors.

Grace possessed the ball calmly for the rest of the match and consistently threatened. The Lady Lancers hit the goalpost twice and kept the ball in Rochester’s half of the field.

Grace earned yet another penalty kick in the second half. Tkacz was pulled down in the box, and she then converted the PK for the final 3-0 scoreline.

Bethany Blackwood, last year’s NAIA leader in shutouts, picked up her first shutout of the season. She had to make just one save in 90 minutes and was protected well by Tkacz, Lea Moessinger, McKenna Cruz, Brooke Kohler and Anna Kuhl.

The Lady Lancers hit the road on Saturday, playing at Shawnee State in the second game of the season.
