No. 16 IWU Takes Down Visiting RV Trojans
MARION, Ind. – A Wednesday night matchup between the 16th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats (18-5, 12-3 CL) and the RV Taylor Trojans (17-6, 10-5 CL) ended in favor of the hosting Wildcats. IWU maintained control through a majority of the contest for the 87-58 TU defeat.
Despite going two weeks without competing on the court, the Purple and Gold started strong from the tipoff. TU built a five-point lead with four Trojans collecting nine points in the opening five minutes of the contest.
The host squad responded quickly, finishing the first quarter on a 19-4 run. IWU continued to rally in the second quarter for a 21-point halftime advantage.
After the halftime break, Taylor put together a surge to bring its deficit down to 15. Taylor Westgate opened the rally with a two-point bucket, before Merideth Deckard and Lauren James sank back-to-back triples for a 7-0 TU run.
IWU slowly increased its lead later in the third and into the fourth, helping the Wildcats score the 87-58 win.
Turnovers plagued the TU squad on Wednesday with 19 giveaways leading to 23 points for Indiana Wesleyan. Taylor also shot the ball below its season averages, shooting at a 36.8 percent from the floor, 23.5 percent from deep and 47.1 percent from the foul line.
Three Trojans offered nine points in the loss, including Deckard, Madisyn Fischer and Gretchen Moll. Sophomore center Moll nabbed nine points in 11 minutes of action, while going four-for-four from the field.
RV Taylor is scheduled to return home for Senior Day in a competition against Saint Francis (15-10, 8-7 CL) on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
