UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 24 Purdue received a forfeit in the first match, but it was all Penn State thereafter as the top-ranked Nittany Lions went on to win 43-6. The Boilermakers’ record moved to 5-4 overall and 0-3 against Big Ten Conference opponents, while PSU won its 39th straight dual and went to 8-0 and 4-0 in the Big Ten.
No. 12 Luke Welch received a forfeit at 125 pounds for Purdue’s only points in the dual. Eight of the next nine bouts featured a top-10 ranked wrestler for Penn State, including five that hold down the Nos. 1 or 2 spot in the nation.
At 133 pounds, the only takedown that PSU’s Corey Keener scored came off a Ben Thornton shot and was the difference in a 3-2 loss for the Purdue redshirt junior. No. 15 Shawn Streck was unable to even the score after a takedown by eighth-ranked Nick Nevills and surrendered the riding time point, dropping a 4-2 decision.
It’s a quick turnaround for the Boilermakers. They will look to bounce back on their home mat when they return to Holloway Gymnasium on Sunday for a 1 p.m. ET matchup with No. 14 Illinois.
