UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor women’s soccer team’s upset bid against No. 5 Columbia fell short on Wednesday night, as the visiting Cougars netted the game’s only goal in the 46th minute to take a 1-0 victory over TU at Turner Stadium.
The 17th-ranked Trojans controlled possession in the first half, forcing 5th-ranked Columbia (5-0) on its heels the majority of the opening 45 minutes and holding a 5-4 lead in shots at the intermission.
After the break, Columbia’s Samantha Bassler recorded the lone goal of the contest, driving a shot over the keeper’s outstretched arms from 20 yards out just 40 seconds into the second half.
TU threatened multiple times throughout the game, including a header by Bailey Zehr with 30:53 remaining in the match that was saved by the diving Cougar goalkeeper, but the visitors held firm to seal the Trojans’ defeat.
Megan Kammer led Taylor with four shots, while Nikki Zaino added three, all of which were on goal.
No. 17 TU (3-1) will be back in action on Friday night, as the Trojans host Indiana Tech (2-1) inside Turner Stadium at 7:00 pm.
