Offensive Outpouring Helps MVNU Upset Visiting RV Trojans
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The TU women’s basketball squad hit the road for its Wednesday matchup with Mount Vernon Nazarene (10-9, 7-5 CL). The Cougars posted one of their best outings on offense, taking down Taylor (16-5, 9-4 CL), 80-58.
TU fell behind early with a 19-5 run favoring MVNU to end the first period. The host squad posted 10 field goals with a 66.7 field goal percentage to score 28 points.
Taylor Westgate came off the bench to provide the offense for TU, scoring seven of the team’s 13 points in the opening quarter. The freshman paced the Trojans with 15 points and six rebounds on the night. In four of the last five games, the forward has reached double-digit points, while hitting at least 10 points for the seventh time this season.
MVNU continued to push its advantage in the second stanza, building a 27-point lead halfway through the quarter. Six different Trojans scored in the final five minutes of the second quarter to help the team go on a 16-3 run. The team hit three triples in the stretch to bring the deficit to 14 heading into the half.
The halftime break stopped the TU momentum, as the Cougars regained control in the second half. MVNU slowly increased their lead until the final buzzer, taking the 80-58 victory.
Madisyn Fischer posted her 16th double-digit scoring performance with 10 points on Wednesday. As a team, the Trojans were on par with their season average from long range, netting 10 treys at a 38.5 percent clip.
RV Taylor is set to return to action in a road contest against Bethel (4-14, 0-11 CL) on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
