Ohio State Buckeyes Are Rose Bowl Bound
Ohio State will meet Pac 12 champion Washington in The Granddaddy of Them All on Jan. 1
COLUMBUS, Ohio – After winning the program’s 37th Big Ten Conference championship last night in Indianapolis, No. 6 Ohio State (12-1) is headed to the Rose Bowl Game and will take on Pac 12 champion No. 9 Washington (10-3) on January 1, 2019, in Pasadena, Calif.
This will mark the Buckeyes’ 15th Rose Bowl appearance and first since 2010. Ohio Stat owns a 7-7 all-time record at the Rose Bowl, but has won in each of its last two appearances – a 26-17 victory against Oregon in 2010 and a 20-17 win over Arizona State in 1997.
Ohio State won its second consecutive Big Ten title on Saturday night with a 45-24 victory over No. 21 Northwestern at Lucas Oil Stadium. Most Valuable Player Dwayne Haskins set Ohio State’s single-game passing record with 499 yards while tossing five touchdowns to raise his season total to 47. His 4,580 yards rank first nationally as do his 47 touchdown passes. The Buckeyes own the nation’s No. 2-ranked total offense (548.8 yards/game), No. 2 passing offense (373.0 yards/game) and No. 8 scoring offense (43.5 points/game).
Washington won the Pac 12 on Friday evening by defeating Utah, 10-3, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The Huskies are led by All-Pac 12 quarterback Jake Browning, who had 2,879 yards passing and 16 touchdowns this season.
The Buckeyes and Huskies have played 11 previous times, all during the regular season. Ohio State has won eight of those 11 games, most recently in 2007 – a 33-14 win in Seattle.
This year’s Rose Bowl will be the first appearance in Pasadena for head coach Urban Meyer, who is 11-3 over his career in bowl games for a .785 winning percentage that is second-highest in college football history. He has previously coached Ohio State to postseason wins at the Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Cotton Bowl and the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
