Ohio State Beats Iowa in Three Sets

Jenaisya Moore had a match-high 16 kills

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team took care of business on Wednesday night with a 3-0 triumph (25-22, 25-23, 26-24) over Iowa inside the Covelli Center. The win lifts the Buckeyes to 10-9 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten while the Hawkeyes fall to 7-11 and 1-6 in conference matches.

Jenaisya Moore was Ohio State’s leader on offense for the third straight match with 16 kills. Elle Sandbothe connected on 12 of her 19 swings with just two errors for a .526 clip. Gabby Gonzales tallied a career-high 12 digs and had nine kills.

Becca Mauer did a little bit of everything as she hit .571 with four kills on seven error-free swings, totaled season highs in assists (43) and kills (4) and dug six balls. Adria Powell chipped in six kills, three blocks and two service aces while Jordan Fry notched four rejections and three kills.

SET 1: The teams exchanged the first points of the match until a 6-1 run, highlighted by four kills from Moore, put the Buckeyes ahead 13-9. The Hawkeyes came back to tie the set at 19-all, which forced an Ohio State timeout. It was Iowa turn to take a break as it trailed 22-19 after a pair of Buckeye kills and an ace. Ohio State scored three of the last four points, capped off by a tricky kill from Mauer for a 25-22 win.

SET 2: Iowa called for time as Ohio State went up 13-10. The Hawkeyes needed another timeout down 18-15 after a kill by Fry. A pair of miscues had the Buckeyes going to their bench with a 23-21 edge. OSU was able to hold off the visitors for a 25-23 victory.

SET 3: Four unanswered points gave the Hawkeyes a 9-7 lead. Two kills by Gonzales and a Fry-Gonzales block helped Ohio State make up the difference for an 18-16 advantage. Iowa used a 4-0 sprint to regain the upper hand, 22-21. The Buckeyes bounced back with five of the last seven points thanks to kills by Moore, Sandbothe and Gonzales to seal the set, 26-24.
