Ohio State Falls to Duke in NCAA Second Round

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 7/9 and #2 seed Ohio State Buckeyes (26-6, 16-2 B1G) fell to RV/- and #7 seed Duke (22-11, 11-7 ACC) on Sunday by a 75-63 margin in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Value City Arena in the Schottenstein Center.
Ohio State used an 8-0 run late in the first quarter to build a 20-10 lead in the first 10 minutes of play. Duke ended the first half on a 9-0 run to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to 36-32 at halftime. The Blue Devils took their first lead of the game in the third quarter and led 51-50 after three quarters of play. Duke had the 24-13 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Cotie McMahon was the first in the game to double figures, finishing with 27 points and surpassing the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season. Joining McMahon in double figures was Jacy Sheldon with 13 points.

How it Happened
Scoring opened with a three-point play from McMahon and the Buckeyes used back-to-back baskets to grab an early 7-2 lead just over a minute into the game. A 5-0 OSU run gave the Buckeyes a 12-4 lead before Duke got to the free throw line for the next four points. Ohio State used an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 20-10 after 10 minutes.

The Buckeyes scored the first five points of the second quarter to increase the lead to 25-10 with 7:42 to play before halftime and held the 30-14 lead midway through the quarter. Duke put together a run of 6-0 and then scored the final nine points of the first half to cut its deficit to 36-32 going into the locker room.

After a basket from Duke to open the third quarter, McMahon scored back-to-back to increase Ohio State’s lead to 40-34. The Blue Devils scored four unanswered points to get within one at 44-43 midway through the quarter and tied the game at 47 with 1:51 to play in the third quarter. The Blue Devils took their first lead of the game at 49-47 with 1:26 remaining in the quarter. The Buckeyes trailed 51-50 after 30 minutes.

The fourth quarter featured three ties and four lead changes. Neither team scored more than three unanswered points in the first five minutes of the quarter and Duke held the 59-57 lead midway through quarter. The Blue Devils went on a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 63-57 with 3:37 to play. Duke increased its lead to 68-59 with one minute remaining. Scoring was capped at the free throw line, 75-63.
