Ohio State Wins Buckeye Invite Title
Buckeyes are on a four-match win streak
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team extended its win streak to four matches and clinched the 2019 Buckeye Invite crown with a pair of wins Friday night at the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes swept Illinois State (25-21, 25-18, 27-25) and took down Dayton in four sets (24-26, 25-16, 25-20, 25-23). The victories lift Ohio State to 7-5 on the year. Illinois State falls to 7-4 and Dayton drops to 6-6 this season.
Although the tournament concludes on Saturday afternoon with a match between Illinois State and Dayton, Ohio State’s win means the Buckeyes have three players on the all-tournament team. Kylie Murr picked up her first MVP title and is joined by Elle Sandbothe and Lauren Witte on the all-tournament squad.
MATCH ONE: Ohio State 3, Illinois State 0
Mia Grunze recorded the first double-double of the season behind 12 kills and 11 digs. Adria Powell added a season-high 11 kills while Elle Sandbothe had seven kills and three blocks. Lauren Witte connected on 6-of-14 error-free swings to hit .429 with five rejections and two service aces. Mac Podraza had 16 assists and Becca Mauer posted 17 helpers and two aces. Kylie Murr rounded out the defense with 14 digs.
SET 1: Illinois State needed a break early as a 4-0 run gave Ohio State a 13-8 lead. The Redbirds hung around to force a Buckeye timeout at the 21-16 mark. Bukilić’s kill sealed the set, 25-21.
SET 2: The Buckeyes trailed 13-12 after five straight points by the Redbirds. A 5-0 sprint put Ohio State ahead 18-15, featuring a monster block by Grunze and Sandbothe. The home squad kept rolling to a 25-18 win.
SET 3: The final frame featured 17 ties and six lead changes. Illinois State had a slight 17-16 edge after a pair of Ohio State miscues. The Buckeyes put the pressure on the Redbirds with six consecutive points for a 25-24 advantage. Powell capped off an 8-1 run with an ace to complete the comeback, 27-25.
MATCH TWO: Ohio State 3, Dayton 1
Becca Mauer (28 assists, 10 digs) and Mia Grunze (11 kills, 11 digs) both had double-doubles for the Buckeyes. Vanja Bukilić tied her career-high with 19 kills while Lauren Witte hit .500 (10-1-18), served a career-high six aces and tallied four rejections. Elle Sandbothe recorded nine kills and five blocks.
Off the bench, Adria Powell had seven kills, four blocks and two aces. Mac Podraza handed out 16 assists and registered three kills. Kylie Murr and Bia Franklin notched 21 and 10 digs, respectively.
SET 1: Ohio State scored the first four points of the match, highlighted by back-to-back aces from Powell. Dayton chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the score at 15-all. Neither team was willing to back down as they traded the next 17 points but the Flyers finished the set on a 3-0 run for the 26-24 decision.
SET 2: Dayton called for time as Ohio State went up 10-6. A pair of kills by Bukilić and an ace from Witte extended the lead to 17-11. The Buckeyes kept rolling for a 25-16 victory.
SET 3: A 6-1 sprint got the frame going in OSU’s favor. The Flyers fought their way back to lock the score at 16-16. The Buckeyes regained the lead on kills by Grunze and cruised to a 25-20 win.
SET 4: A pair of aces by Witte capped off a 7-3 run for Ohio State but Dayton quickly closed the gap at 11-11. The score went back and forth until the Buckeyes got ahead 18-16 on kills by Powell, which forced the Flyers to use a timeout. It was OSU’s turn to call a timeout when Dayton locked the set at 23-all. Another kill by Powell and an attacking error by the Flyers clinched the set, 25-23.
Ohio State opens its Big Ten slate on the road at Maryland on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Action is set to begin at 6 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
