Bourbonnais, Ill. – The Tigers were able to hold off the Jaguars of Governors State University to advance to the semi-finals of the CCAC tournament. From the jump, the Tigers were able to dominate in the post, with Alex Gross (SO/Hope, Ind.) recording a game-high 25 points. Governors State started with the lead, but a dunk by Gross would swing the momentum in favor of the Tigers as they took control of the game. The first half would remain close and at one point, the Jaguars would retake the lead, but only for a moment. Gross would complete a full-court pass to Kensen Vaughan (SR/Red Oak, Texas) for a layup to take back the lead. This was followed by a 10-point run for the Tigers as the half closed out. The run was capped off by a last-second jumper from Gavin Griggs (JR/Middletown, Ind.) to give the Tigers an 11-point lead going into halftime.
To start the second half, Dane Schlafley (SR/Peoria, Ill.) would make consecutive shots to extend the Tigers lead. Then, around the 14-minute mark, Nic Reed (SR/New Albany, Ind.) put in a layup for the Tigers to become for the first player in ONU history to reach 3,000 points scored in their career. Reed would finish the game with 23 points to give him a career total of 3,004.
As the half continued, the Jaguars clawed their way back to within eight points, but the relentless Tiger attack would not cease. Alex Gross would put his final stamp of the game with a layup to go up by double digits once again, and a clutch layup by C.J. Smith at the 2-minute mark would give the Tigers the final push they needed. Down the stretch, the Tigers would hit nine out of 10 free throws to seal the deal, winning by a margin of 10.
