Patrick’s 1-Hitter, Thorn’s Walk-off Walk Helps PNW Baseball Sweep Parkside Saturday

HAMMOND, Ind. — Sophomore Chad Patrick threw a one-hit complete game shutout in Game 1 and junior Hunter Thorn drew a bases-loaded walk which scored junior Anthony Agne in Game 2 as the Purdue Northwest baseball team swept both games of a doubleheader against Parkside at Laborers’ Local 41 Field inside Dowling Park Saturday.

GAME 1: PNW 6, PARKSIDE 0
PNW jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the opening frame. Junior Brett Veltema (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) smacked a double down the left field line which scored Ray Hilbrich (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) from first base to make it 1-0.

Ray Hansen (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) extended the lead to 2-0 with his RBI single that scored Veltema. Couple innings later, Veltema grounded into a forceout to make it 3-0.

A triple by Hilbrich which scored Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) expanded the PNW lead to 4-0. One batter later, Veltema had an RBI groundout scoring Hilbrich for a 5-0 lead.

Agne (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) made it 6-0 with his groundout to second which scored Kevin McCune (Munster, Ind./Andrean)

Patrick (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning before Parkside led off the frame with a double down the right-field line. The sophomore picked up the victory on the mound (1-2), finishing the day with a complete-game shutout, only allowing one hit, issuing two walks and struck out four.

GAME 2: PNW 5, PARKSIDE 4
This time it was Parkside jumping out first on the scoreboard. The Rangers went ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning.

Parkside added two more runs in the top of the third inning to make it 3-0. PNW looked to slowly cut into the lead and added one back after Thorn hit a sacrifice fly which scored Michael Woods (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove).

The Rangers got that run back a few innings later in the top of the sixth inning which made it 4-1. The Pride came back after scoring three runs to tie the game in the bottom of the frame.

Agne singled to left field, scoring Hansen from third as it made the score 4-2. Hunter Ryan (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Justin Graves (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) to make it 4-3.

The Pride tied the score at 4 after Nick Albanese broke up Parkside’s chance for a double-play that scored Agne. Thorn came up the game-winning RBI as the junior came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth and drew a four-pitch walk that scored Agne as PNW won 5-4.
