PNW Men’s Soccer Defeats Ashland for First GLIAC Victory
HAMMOND, Ind. – A penalty kick goal by senior Djordje Cancarevic (Sabec, Serbia/Chippewa) in the 54th minute of regulation proved to be the difference as the Purdue University Northwest men’s soccer team secured its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) victory in program history Sunday afternoon, defeating Ashland University (Ohio), 2-1.
The Pride scored the first goal of the match early in the opening half, when Isaiah Niaves (Lyons Township, Ill./Lyons Township) assisted Enrique Serna (Majadahonda, Spain/Colegio San Jaime), who blasted a shot across the 18-yard box to beat the keeper and give the Pride a 1-0 lead just 13 minutes into the match.
PNW held the Eagles scoreless for the rest of the half, owning a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Within the first 10 minutes of the second half, Cancarevic capitalized on the penalty kick to extend the Pride’s lead to 2-0.
Ashland answered back shortly after to put themselves within a goal, but the Pride held strong for the rest of the match and came away with the 2-1 victory.
Senior Miguel David (San Diego,Calif./Bonita Vista) picked up the win to improve to 2-2-1 in front of the net, tallying one save.
The Black and Gold return to action Friday, Sept. 22, when they host Northern Michigan at Dowling Park at 3:30 p.m. (CT).
