Volleyball Defeats Saint Xavier In Five-Set Thriller Tuesday 

CHICAGO, Ill. — The Purdue University Northwest volleyball team recorded a five-set thrilling victory against non-conference host Saint Xavier at the Shannon Center Tuesday night.

The Pride (3-22) defeated the Cougars (19-9) in five sets, 25-15, 27-29, 20-25, 25-21, 15-9.

SXU won the first set, 25-15. Senior Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South) picked up a kill to make it 16-12 in favor the Cougars but that was the closest the Pride would get in the opening set.

PNW fought back and tied the match in the second set, after trailing 11-6 early, a kill from freshman Jenna Dal Santo (St. John, Ind./Andrean) made it 15-14 in favor of the Pride and they never trailed the rest of the set. Dal Santo secured the Set 2 win for PNW with another kill as the Pride won 29-27 in a seesaw battle.

The Pride took a 2-1 lead in the match after taking the back-and-forth third set, 25-20. Junior Brooke Carter (Chicago, Ill./King College Prep) gave PNW a 15-13 advantage and allowed them to lead the rest of the way.

SXU did not go away as the Cougars tied the match at 2 sets apiece after taking the fourth set, 25-21. After the match was tied, 16-16, Saint Xavier rallied to outscore PNW, 9-5, to take the set.

In the winnertakeall fifth setPNW led 60 to start things off thanks to a stellar opening service performance from Casey Neulieb (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) who recorded a pair of aces in that span. The Cougars fought back and made it 109 late in the set, but PNW then rallied for the last five points including a kill by Jones that ended the set and the match.

Pasko and Dal Santo both led PNW with 14 kills on the night while senior Carissa Jones (WhitingInd./Bishop Noll) also had a big night for the Pride, recording 11 kills for the match.

PNW returns to action Friday, Oct. 26 as the Pride travel to Wayne State to take on the Warriors, with match time scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
