Women’s Basketball Suffers Setback to #11 Ashland Thursday

ASHLAND, Ohio — The Purdue University Northwest women’s basketball team showed some positive signs but the No. 11 team in the country Ashland proved to be too much as the Eagles defeated the Pride, 82-49, at Kates Gymnasium Thursday.

Junior Bayley Goodman (Fowler, Ind./Benton Central) scored 15 points which tied the team-high. Freshman Brittany Barnard (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) added 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in the loss for the Pride.

Ashland started out the game on a 19-2 run but both teams traded baskets towards the end of the first quarter when Goodman hit a layup to end the first period.

PNW looked to get back in the game midway through the second quarter as Barnard and Shae Rhonehouse (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) nailed back-to-back three-pointers to make it 33-20 Ashland with 2:04 left in the first half. Back-to-back baskets by Lanie Allen (East Noble, Ind./East Noble) and Barnard kept it a 13-point game going into the half-time break.

Goodman hit a huge three to start the second half to make it 37-27 in favor of Ashland but unfortunately that was the closest the Pride would get the rest of the night. The Eagles started to make a run when PNW cut it to 12 at the 7:13 mark after a layup by Allen.

Goodman started the fourth quarter the same way she started the third with a trifecta to make it 50-36. Ashland then outscored PNW 26-9 the rest of the way to win the game 82-49.

PNW returns to action Saturday, February 16 as the Pride travel to Wayne State to take on the Warriors at Matthaei Center in Detroit, Mich. starting at noon.
