WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue soccer junior Julia Ware has been appointed a member of the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee, the NCAA has announced.

Ware’s term begins immediately and will continue through June 30, 2022.

“I am humbled with the opportunity that both the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA Selection Committee have made possible,” Ware said. “Considering the repercussions of the current COVID-19 pandemic on all of intercollegiate athletics, the Competition Oversight Committee has a significant responsibility to modify and host every NCAA championship this academic year. With great excitement, I look forward to joining this committee of experienced conference and university athletics administrators, learning from them, representing my peers and committing my energies to help make every NCAA Division I Championship special and meaningful for all student-athlete participants.”

“Julia will be an excellent representative of Purdue University, and we are proud of her appointment as a member of the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee,” Purdue vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics Mike Bobinski said. “This is a great opportunity for Julia, and I know she will use her experience as a student-athlete here at Purdue to make a positive impact on the committee during her term. Julia will be a great ambassador for the Big Ten Conference, our athletics department and soccer program.”

Ware is one of 21 members on the competition oversight committee. She is one of three student-athletes on a committee that includes two conference commissioners and 11 athletics directors. From the Big Ten Conference, Ware is joined on the committee by Wendy Fallen, one of the league’s associate commissioners.

The Competition Oversight Committee has oversight responsibility of regular-season and championship administration in all sports except for football and men’s and women’s basketball, a task that includes supervision of qualification and/or selection procedures for national championship events. The committee focuses on improving the educational experience of student-athletes, both academically and athletically, which will promote student-athletes’ personal growth and leadership development.

Additionally, the committee reviews recommendations from sports committees and oversees issues related to the administration of those championships. Sports committees, other than football and men’s and women’s basketball, report directly to the Competition Oversight Committee.

As a member of an NCAA committee, Ware will regularly participate in committee meetings.

A native of Frisco, Texas, Ware is majoring in law and society at Purdue. She was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team in 2019-20.

In two seasons as a Boilermaker, Ware has played in 37 of Purdue’s 38 matches and has logged 3,129 career minutes. The defender started 14 of 17 contests in 2018 as a freshman and all 20 matches as a sophomore in 2019 while playing 1773 minutes, third-most on the team. Ware has 14 career shots and three shots on goal.

More Than A Game

The More Than A Game campaign was launched in August, in partnership with the John Purdue Club, to help the athletics department navigate the financial ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic and position Boilermaker athletics for future success.

Purdue Athletics is one of only a handful of Division I athletics departments that is entirely self-sustaining: it does not receive any taxpayer dollars, general fund support from Purdue University, or student fees. John Purdue Club memberships are directed to funding the $12 million scholarship cost for student-athletes and this separate fund will help offset a 2020-21 Purdue Athletics budget shortfall that could approach or exceed $50 million.

Boilermakers and friends can make a contribution to the More Than A Game campaign by contacting their Boilermaker Athletics Representative or by visiting JPCMoreThanAGame.com.
