SOUTH BEND – The one thing consistent about Notre Dame’s hockey team this season has been its inconsistency. No matter what retiring coach Jeff Jackson and his hockey staff have tried, the Fighting Irish just can’t seem to get out of their own way.
That was the case again as Notre Dame started well Friday night in the opening game of their Big Ten Conference series with No. 9 Ohio State at the Compton Family Ice Arena before the Buckeyes took control in the second half of the second period with two unanswered goals on way to a 5-1 victory.
“It’s just the consistency factor,” Jackson said after the Irish (9-17-1 overall, 3-13-1 Big Ten for 11 points) slipped deeper into the Big Ten cellar. “We can’t seem to get a 60-minute hockey game in.”
After being swept and outshot in December in Columbus, the Irish matched the Buckeyes shot for shot in the opening period Friday. The sellout crowd of 5,165 watching around the Lefty Smith Rink then erupted when defenseman Paul Fischer and center Cole Knuble used nifty passes to set up Blake Biondi’s 10-foot power-play quick shot over the right shoulder of Ohio State goalie Logan Terness at 17:31 of the first period.
But the lead lasted just 48 seconds after his teammates left defenseman Henry Nelson outnumbered by Buckeyes. Nelson’s attempt to clear the defensive zone was knocked down by Ohio State defenseman Damien Carfagna, who then found unguarded Buckeye captain Davis Burnside, who skated in to beat Irish goaltender Owen Say at 18:19 to tie the game.
Notre Dame, which outshot Ohio State 13-10 in the first period, eventually had a 21-13 shot advantage in the second period after Terness turned away a shot by Irish right wing Ian Murphy at 9:38. It turned out to be the last shot on goal by Notre Dame in the period as coach Steve Rohlik’s Buckeyes took command with two late goals by Ryan Gordon (16:42) and Riley Thompson (18:44) to take control of the game.
“Giving up that first goal was a tough play,” Jackson said. “I thought we did okay in the start of the second, but we kind of fell asleep later on.”
Ohio State successfully killed off four Irish power play opportunities in the third period – including a 5-on-3 Irish advantage for 54 seconds early on. The Buckeyes then got an empty-net goal by Patrick Guzzo at 19:09 and Gordon’s second of the game 25 seconds later to improve to 17-8-2 overall and 10-6-1 Big Ten for third place with 31 points, nine behind first-place Michigan State (a 2-1 loser to Michigan Friday) and seven behind idle Minnesota.
Terness and Say each finished with 27 saves as Ohio State outshot Notre Dame 32-28. The teams skate Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. after noted National Anthem singer Jim Cornelison performs on “Chicago Blackhawks Night.” Jackson, who admits he gets inspired by Cornelison’s rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner,” probably hopes his team can benefit as well.
“We need all of our guys to be on at the same time,” Jackson continued. “That doesn’t happen on a consistent basis. We need to find that consistency in our game and it’s getting late.”
The Irish find themselves six points behind sixth-place Penn State, which beat Wisconsin 2-0 Friday night in Madison. Notre Dame travels to Penn State next weekend and follows that road trip with another to Wisconsin before concluding the regular season at home against the Spartans Feb. 28 and March 1. If Notre Dame remains in last place, it would play a best-of-three series at the second-place team in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
“We just have to find a way to play 60 minutes,” said Jackson, the winningest active coach in Division I men’s hockey who remained two victories shy of 600 in his career, 416 which have come at Notre Dame in 20 seasons, four of which ended with NCAA Frozen Four appearances. “We don’t play back-to-back night-in and night-out. That’s what good teams do. We just can’t find that extra gear when we need it. (Ohio State) did tonight; we didn’t.”
