Seniors power Grace to crucial win
WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace’s women’s basketball team picked up a much-needed win, topping Spring Arbor 80-72 on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers (12-14) were propelled in the second half by a trio of seniors as Grace raced away for the victory.
Seniors Kyannah Stull, Kamryn Hostetler and Kaylie Warble teamed up to score 39 of the team’s 44 points in the second half. Stull amassed 23 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds, tallying 18 of her points after halftime.
The contest on Wednesday started sloppily with five combined turnovers in the opening minute. Play soon smoothed out as both teams shot the ball well.
Kaylee Patton gave Grace a spark by scoring six of the team’s first eight points. Kate Rulli provided a boost late, scoring five straight points for Grace.
The teams ended the quarter level at 19-19, and the score remained close throughout the second period.
Neither team led by more than three points in the second quarter. Hostetler muscled her way to a layup in the final 30 seconds, lifting the Lady Lancers to a 36-34 lead at halftime.
Grace shot 67 percent from the field in the half and 50 percent on 3-pointers. The Cougars (5-7) made 52 percent of its field goals and outrebounded Grace by four. Patton’s eight points led Grace at the intermission.
The Cougars began to pound the paint in the third quarter and opened up a four-point edge with two minutes remaining in the third.
But Grace caught fire from deep with three consecutive triples to claim momentum. Stull buried two 3-pointers and Hostetler had another to put Grace on top 55-52 entering the last stanza.
Stull and Hostetler scored all 19 points in the third quarter for Grace; Stull tallied 11 with Hostetler adding eight. Fifteen of those 19 points came from beyond the arc.
Grace began to pull away midway into the fourth quarter. Warble made strong cuts in the lane, scoring on three straight plays to give Grace a 68-57 lead and forcing a timeout from SAU.
Hostetler followed that up with a triple as the Lady Lancers led by 12.
The Cougars did their best to rally, trimming Grace’s lead to five with 1:26 on the clock. But Grace made SAU foul down the stretch, icing the game with seven free throws in the closing minutes.
Hostetler finished with 18 points, 13 of which came after halftime. Warble scored eight of her 12 points after halftime.
Patton finished with 11 points, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 rebounds, and Maddie Ryman added 7 points, 6 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Rulli finished with five points off the bench, and Kenzie McMahon added 2 points, 2 assists and 2 boards.
The Lady Lancers end the regular season on Saturday at Huntington at 1 p.m.
