PALM HARBOR, Fla.—Despite a rough opening round, the Fire men’s golf team rallied for a strong finish and an eighth place finish at the USCB Innisbrook Invitational.
Taking on the famed Copperhead Course, the Fire opened with a team score of 316, which matched the highest of the tournament, but answered back with a 299 in the second round, and closed with a 303 on Tuesday.
The Fire started the final round in 12th place, but were just nine shots out of eighth.
SEU was just 18 shots behind second-ranked Dalton State, which placed seventh. No. 6 Northwestern Ohio was the overall champion, beating fourth ranked Coastal Georgia by seven shots.
Freshman Andres Padilla made the biggest improvement, moving up 12 spots on the final day with his one-over par 72 to place 13th. He finished the 54-hole tournament with an overall score of 222 (79-71-72). Padilla finished his day with three birdies, and was even on the back nine.
Jacob Soucinek carded a pair of 76’s in the final two rounds to finish in a tie for 39th with a total score of 230. Soucinek recorded three birdies in the final round, one of which was on the 590-yard “Packard’s Double Dogleg” 14th hole that is rated the second toughest on the course.
Nicholas Maff placed 47th with a total score of 233 (81-73-79), and was followed by Noah Endicott in 51st, who improved eight spots in the final round with a 76, recording the team’s best score on the front nine of the day at even par. Endicott finished with a score of 234 (78-80-76).
Landry Miller rounded out the lineup with a score of 242 (82-79-81) to place 63rd.
The Fire return to the course on October 13 for the annual Webber Fall Classic at Lake Wales Country Club.
