Bears slip by Grace in OT

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Shawnee State snuck away from the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center with a 99-94 win in overtime against Grace’s men’s basketball team on Friday.

The Lancers (3-1) led for the majority of Friday’s game. But Grace’s offense dried up late in regulation, allowing the Bears to force overtime and eventually win.

Haden Deaton led Grace with 21 points, and Cade Gibbs added 18 points and six boards.

The game was played evenly in the first half in a fast-paced matchup. Grace used a 9-0 spurt, keyed by five points from Myles Johnson, to grab a six-point lead.

Shawnee State kept the score close and even went ahead 30-29 with five minutes remaining in the first half.

But Grace went on a surge to close the half. The Lancers ended the half on a sizzling 16-2 run.

Elijah Malone played a huge role in Grace’s charge. The freshman scored on back-to-back post moves, including an and-1. He also added two blocks on the defensive end.

Grace went into the halftime break with a 45-32 lead. The Lancers shot 51 percent from the floor compared to 35 percent for the Bears.

The Lancers started the second half as the better team. Grace eventually earned an 18-point lead at 56-38 with 16:25 remaining.

But the Bears slowly and steadily chipped away at Grace’s margin. The Bears used a 6-0 run and later a 7-0 run to pull within striking distance.

Grace still held an eight-point lead with 3:45 on the clock before the Lancers’ offensive touch went cold.

Grace came up empty on its next seven possessions, including 2 turnovers, 4 missed field goals and 2 missed free throws.

The Bears capitalized to grab an unlikely 83-81 lead with under a minute remaining.

Gibbs was fouled with 24 seconds remaining, and the freshman calmly hit both foul shots to tie the game.

Grace played strong defense during Shawnee’s final possession, forcing a contested jumper which missed to send the game to overtime.

Grace’s offensive woes carried into the extra period, however. The Lancers could not score on four of their first five possessions, compared to the Bears who scored nine points during that time.

The Lancers did their best to find a comeback, but the damage was already done in the five-point defeat.

The Bears shot a sizzling 63 percent after halftime, including a 6-of-10 performance from beyond the arc. Grace, on the other hand, shot 40 percent after halftime. The Lancers made just six of their 17 tries from the 3-point line.

Matt Jennings finished with 16 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds, and Frankie Davidson added 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.

Malone posted 12 points, 5 boards and 2 blocks in 15 minutes off the bench, and Johnson scored eight points with five rebounds.

The Lancers’ next game is Nov. 21 at home against Taylor in the Crossroads League opener.
