Goshen continues conference shutout streak with 9-0 win

GOSHEN, Ind. — Six straight-set singles successes set the stage for a sweep Tuesday as Goshen College shut out Bethel College 9-0 in Crossroads League men’s tennis action at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Evan Beck and Juan Miguel Ciudad both took the shutout theme one step further in 6-0, 6-0 wins, with Ciudad topping Evan Ferguson at no. 2 singles and Beck upending Jeryl Weaver at the no. 6 position.

Martim Cafe and Josh Friesen nearly jumped on that bandwagon as well with each player dropping a single game in the second set of 6-0, 6-1 wins at no. 3 and no. 6 respectively.

Danny Boussom and Kartikeya Sharma rounded out the lineup with a pair of routine victories: Boussom topped Jacob Macri in the no. 1 match to remain undefeated in his Maple Leaf singles career while Sharma broke his opponent’s serve late in the second set to finish off a win at no. 4 singles.

Goshen (3-0, 2-0) won all three singles matches as well, getting 8-3 wins from both the first (Boussom/Cafe) and second (Ciudad/Sharma) positions.

The Maple Leaf win, combined with Indiana Wesleyan’s victory at Marian, leaves Goshen and IWU as the only undefeated sides in the 10-team Crossroads League; on Wednesday, the league slate reached the point of being one-third complete. The match also marked Goshen’s ninth straight win over Bethel in conference play dating back to 2010.

Goshen returns to action with a trip to Grace at 3:30 p.m. Thursday before visiting IWU on Saturday morning.

More, including comments from GC director of tennis Evan Atkinson, to come when available.
