In the first game of the season, the No. 25 ranked Southeastern men’s soccer team defeated the Truett McConnell Bears 2-1. The Fire came back from a one goal deficit, to take the lead by a one goal advantage.
The game remained scoreless until the 30th minute of the first half when Truett McConnell player Trevor Fick scored for the Bears to take 1-0 lead over the Fire.
At the 38th minute, head coach Clay Roberts made the decision to substitute junior, Skylar Funk into the game. Funk, a transfer from Lewis and Clark Community College and Illinois native marked his first appearance for the Fire today.
With two minutes left in the first half, Funk would score to tie the game 1-1 just before the break.
Four minutes after the half time, Southeastern would get on the board again, as Funk would score his second goal of the game with the assist by graduate Jake Van Der Luit.
The Fire would keep the Bears quiet for the remainder of the game, taking the game 2-1 over the Bears and earning their first victory of the 2019 season. Senior, Logan Whitney would finish the day with a total of five saves.
Southeastern will be back in action on Monday, as they continue their trip in South Carolina to take on Columbia International University. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
