Three blocked kicks by the Southeastern special teams unit yielded two of the team’s three touchdowns in a 27-6 win at Point University.
Following a 1-yard touchdown run by Lorine Parker, Trenton Surloff blocked a Point punt which was recovered in the end zone by Marquavis Myers. Myers also recovered a punt that was blocked by Eddie Jackson during the second quarter.
“I thought our special teams played extremely well today; they came up big when we needed them to with 21 of our 27 points coming on special teams,” said coach Keith Barefield. “If we didn’t have our special teams playing like they did, we wouldn’t be enjoying what we’re enjoying right now.”
The Fire defense also contributed, getting a pair of interceptions by junior cornerback Chris Thompson, including one in the red zone as Point was looking to make it a two-score game in the fourth quarter.
“It was just a statement of our defense and not wanting teams to score on us,” said Thompson of the defensive effort and his second interception. “Me making that play shows that I was there for my teammates and coaches.”
Junior kicker David Larson connected on field goals of 42 and 43 yards, and all three extra point attempts.
