Taylor Blasts Spartans for Program-Record 41st Win

UPLAND, Ind. – One day after putting 24 runs on the board in a blowout win at Grace, Taylor smacked four home runs in the first two innings of a 15-0 rout of Manchester to close the regular season with a program-best 41 wins to just 12 defeats.

The Trojan bats stayed red-hot, pounding out 19 hits with 12 of those knocks going for extra bases in the seven-inning affair. TU scored four times in the first, added six more in the second and continued to pour it on throughout the evening.

Jared Adkins highlighted the onslaught with a pair of two-run homers, while Nathan Targgart and Alex Sanders also left the yard. Christian McGill came off the bench to lace a pair of triples, Sam Wiese doubled twice and tripled once and the trio of Austin Mettica, Wyatt Whitman and Kyle Kelsheimer also swatted one double each.

A total of 10 Trojans scored at least one run, led by three from Wiese and two each from Targgart and Adkins, while Adkins drove in a team-high four runs and Targgart added three more.

Trevor Booth opened the game on the hill for TU, tossing three scoreless frames to move to 2-0 on the season, before Brenden Bube, Colin Pfotenhauer Justin Pettit and Rob Fox pitched in relief to finish off the combined, six-hit shutout.

Taylor (41-12) will now shift its focus to the 2018 Crossroads League Championship from May 4 through May 9. TU will host the entire eight-team, double-elimination tournament as the second-seeded team and will face seventh-seeded Mount Vernon Nazarene (23-24) in its first game on Friday at 1:00 pm.
