Taylor Closes Non-League Slate with 63-Point Rout of Oakland City

UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor University men’s basketball team put an exclamation mark on its non-league schedule, erupting for a 121-58 blowout win against Oakland City to improve to 6-2 against non-league foes this season.

The win was TU’s fourth-straight victory and the 121 points were the most for a Taylor squad since scoring 128 against Great Lakes Christian on October 28 of 2016 in a 128-69 win. The 63-point margin of victory was the Trojans’ widest spread since handling Ohio-State Newark by 71 in a 106-35 win on November 21 of 2014.

Taylor set numerous single-game season highs as a team as well, making 44 field goals, hitting 11 three-point field goals, dishing out 28 assists, posting eight blocks and picking up 16 steals in addition to the 121 points.

All 13 Trojans that played in the contest cracked the scoring column, with 12 of those players scoring at least four points. TU also had 12 players record at least one rebound in the lopsided win over the Mighty Oaks (3-7).

Taylor dominated nearly every statistical category in the game, shooting 58.7 percent from the field and holding OCU to a 35.0-percent rate. TU also shot 11-of-26 from deep for a 42.3-percent rate and converted on 22-of-25 attempts from the charity stripe.

The Trojans benefited from 24 Oakland City turnovers, posted a 30-6 edge in fast-break scoring and piled up 60 points in the paint while winning the battle on the glass by a 51-28 margin.

Jason Hubbard and CJ Penha led the charge once again, with each scoring 21 points. Hubbard ended with his fourth double-double and added 13 rebounds and three assists in under 22 minutes of work. Penha went eight-of-11 from the floor and added three assists in just under 21 minutes of action.

Vincent Miranda also continued his strong play of late, posting 15 points and three steals, with Kaden Fuhrmann chipping in 14 points on six-of-eight shooting off the bench. The contributions continued with five assists from Zach Baugher and a season-high eight points from Javell Redwood, while Jeff Clayton finished at eight points, four rebounds and three steals.

Taylor (8-5, 2-3 CL) is scheduled to jump back into Crossroads League play on Monday evening at 7:00 pm with a clash against No. 10 Marian (6-1, 2-1 CL) inside Odle Arena.
