Taylor Falls To RV Mount Vernon Nazarene In Crossroads League Quarterfinals

UPLAND, Ind. – In the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon, fourth-seeded Taylor, despite a plethora of scoring chances, was defeated by fifth-seeded RV Mount Vernon Nazarene, 2-1. Saturday’s contest marked the second year in a row that the Trojans were ousted from the tournament by MVNU.

The Trojans (7-5-1, 4-4-0 CL) controlled the majority of the contest, outshooting the Cougars 19-10, including a 10-6 mark in shots on target. Alanna Raikes led TU with five shots, three on frame, while AC Hardy, who collected Taylor’s lone goal in the match, finished with four. Erin Teevans, Morgan Orme, and Hannah Martinez each added two.

Taylor recorded several golden opportunities in the first half, including back-to-back attempts by Martinez right in front of the Mount Vernon goal, but both shots sailed just high of the net. In the 32nd minute, the Cougars broke the scoreless tie, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Early in the second half, Teevans created another excellent opportunity in the box, but MVNU’s defense was able to get in front of the shot and deflect it out of harm’s way.

After the Cougars scored again in the 76th minute, Hardy responded just six minutes later, breaking MVNU’s shutout bid and cutting their lead in half. The sophomore midfielder dribbled down the middle of the pitch and took a shot from long range, tucking the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net just out of the reach of MVNU’s goalkeeper.

The Trojans collected two more excellent scoring chances right after Hardy’s goal, but a Claire Massey shot hit the crossbar and Raikes sent one wide of the net off a corner kick as TU failed to net the equalizer.

Saturday marked the final home contest for Orme, Martinez, Victoria Hilse, and Reyna Williams. The group combined for 151 starts, 164 appearances, 18 goals, 18 assists, 54 points, 130 shots, and 78 shots on goal under Head Coach Scott Stan.

RV MVNU will move on to face top-seeded and No. 2 ranked Marian this coming Wednesday in Indianapolis.
