Taylor Rolls Over St. Francis on the Road
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The RV Taylor women’s soccer team collected its 10th win of the season on Saturday after winning 3-1 over Saint Francis and now have six seasons of 10-or-more wins since 2010.
After being shutout in their last two matches, the Trojans (10-3-2, 3-3 CL) opened the scoring early in the seventh minute. Freshman Erin Teevans took a long pass from sophomore Reyna Williams and was able to get the goalkeeper out of position and place the ball into the upper-right corner for her 10th goal of the season. Williams tallied the first assist and point of her career.
The Cougars (4-7-4, 0-5-1 CL) were able to tie the match in the 68th minute, but TU did not let the home fans enjoy the tie for long. In the 75th minute, senior Savannah Porter was able to sink a penalty kick and capture her second-career game-winner. St. Francis misplayed a ball in front of the net and were called for a handball just outside of the six-yard box, resulting in Porter’s netter.
With less than 60 seconds ticked off the clock from the go-ahead score, freshman Kate Kortenhoeven found herself in the scoring column. Senior Bailey Zehr retrieved a pass and sent it towards an open Kortenhoeven, who tallied her third goal of the season. Zehr paces the team with eight assists and now has 24 points for the year, which tied with Teevans.
The Trojans had four players with three shot attempts and nine that tallied at least one. Junior Hannah Davis, Kortenhoeven, Teevans and Zehr all had three and sophomore Jourdan Lehman added a pair. TU had seven shot attempts in the first 22 minutes of gameplay and held St. Francis until the 51st minute to register a try.
The Purple and Gold’s defense kept the Cougars’ offense in check all night. St. Francis attempted two shots, while TU had 18 attempts and placed 13 on-frame. Sophomore Megan Williams and senior Lauren Engelkes split time in the net, while Engelkes notched her third win of the season and 29th overall.
Taylor hosts RV Indiana Wesleyan (9-4-1, 3-2-1) on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. showdown.
