Titans Clash with Belles in Inaugural Season Opener

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Indiana University South Bend women’s soccer team fell in its season opener at Saint Mary’s on Saturday afternoon. The match was also the first game in program history as the Titans fell by a score of 8-0. With the loss, IUSB is 0-1 in 2019 and returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Indiana Wesleyan.

In the fifth minute mark, Ana Molina delivered the first corner kick of the half for the Titans but the Belles keeper was there to clear the ball out.

The best scoring opportunity for the Titans occurred in the 31st minute off an indirect freekick in the box after a non-threatening foul occurred during a corner. Evelyn Arenas fired a shot five yards out but was blocked by the Belles wall to stop the Titan offense.

Starting goalkeeper Sandra Alvarez grabbed four saves in the first half off 10 shots on goal. The Titan defense drew four offsides in the first 45 minutes while Arenas and Molina both added one shot for IUSB in the half. The Titans added two corners while Saint Mary’s had three, respectively.

In the 62nd minute, Molina delivered her second shot of the day on top of the 18-yard box but sailed just high and wide of the crossbar for the first threat of the second half.

Titans allowed just two Belles goals in the final 45 minutes, occurring in the 48th and 76th minutes. In the second half, the Titans delivered one more shot in the half while SMC added 14 shots for the half. Alvares finished the game with seven saves while Cheyenne Foor added one in the remaining minutes of the match.

Seven different Belles players recorded goals on the day with Rose Stackhouse leading the way with two off three shots on goal.
