LA CROSSE, Wisc. – At the Holiday Inn Express Preseason Tournament on Friday night, the Indiana University South Bend volleyball team battled its season opener but dropped a 3-0 (16-25, 14-25, 20-25) decision to host school and No. 5 NAIA preseason ranked Viterbo University.

Senior Madison Berg collected a game-high 13 digs to begin her final year as a Titan while junior transfer Robbie Berg nearly missed out on a double-double in her first appearance with the Crimson and Cream. Berg tallied a team-high 10 kills to go along with six digs against the nationally ranked opponent.
In 13 total attempts, senior Ashli Drewes notched six kills which was good for a .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore Courtney Lengacher dished out a team-high 18 assists behind Viterbo’s Abby Johnson’s game-high 22 assists.
As a team, the Titans hit just .174 while the V-Hawks attacked at a .330 rate. At the net, Viterbo held the edge recording six blocks compared to IUSB’s two. The two blocks came from Berg as the Muskegon Community College transfer notched two solo blocks.
The V-Hawks quickly jumped out to an early lead in the first and never looked back, leading the entire way to win the set 25-16. In the second set, the Titans held a 5-2 advantage before their nationally ranked opponent regained the lead and won 25-14. In the final set, the Titans battled and led by as many as five before the V-Hawks rattled off nine straight points to help seal the third set and win the match.
Following the loss, the Titans drop to 0-1 on the season and return to R.W. Beggs Sr. Gymnasium tomorrow to face Mayville State University at 11:00 a.m. (EST) and Clarke University at 1:00 p.m. (EST) to conclude the first tournament of the season
