Titans Volleyball Fights Off Goshen College for Senior Day Win

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In its second meeting of the 2019 campaign against Goshen College, the Indiana University South Bend volleyball team came from behind to defeat the Maple Leafs 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-20, 15-11) during Senior Day on Saturday afternoon inside the Student Activities Center.

With the victory, IUSB is now 7-1 at home having won its last seven inside the SAC and improves to 16-11 overall. In five-match sets, the Titans now hold a 5-2 advantage over its opponent after Saturday’s contest. Prior to the match, IU South Bend recognized its five outstanding seniors in Robbie Berg, Madison Burger, Ashli Drewes, Samantha Hockstra and Sydney Lubinski.

The last time these teams met was back on Sept. 7 at the Siena Heights Tri as IUSB took the 3-0 sweep but the Maple Leafs came to fight on Saturday afternoon.

In their second straight game, the Titans started slow but shook off the sluggish start that allowed Goshen College to take the opening set 25-23 to even the match at one with an exciting 26-24 victory in the second.

The Maple Leafs came back to win the third 25-18 after IUSB held an early 8-2 lead. In the fourth, once again the Titans led early but were able to hold Goshen from mounting another comeback to force the decisive fifth set with a 25-20 win.

The fifth set was all IUSB as the Titans only trailed after the first point off a Crimson & Cream attacking error. The Titans held Goshen to a .000 attacking clip in the final set while attacking at their own .167 with eight kills, sealing the Senior Day victory.

Junior transfer Julie Brown registered a career and game-high with 15 kills as the Muskegon Community College transfer attacked at an impressive .289 clip. Seniors Lubinski and Berg followed closely behind for the Titan attack with 13 and 12, respectively. Senior Samantha Hockstra grabbed a game-high 26 digs while junior Hannah Marchand led the defense at the net with six total blocks.

As a team, Indiana University South Bend overmatched GC in kills, 62-59, assists, 58-53, blocks, 11 to eight, and digs 94-93. After a three-game homestand, the Titans trek to St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday, Oct. 29 for another crucial Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference match. First serve in Joliet, Ill. is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (EST).
