Trio of Goals Lift Trojans against Huntington

UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor (3-4-4, 1-0-1) continued Crossroads League play on Wednesday night, putting forth one of its best nights on the pitch to secure a 3-0 victory against Huntington (7-4-0, 0-2-0).

The stats showed an even match, but Taylor was more clinical in front of goal whereas Huntington was denied repeatedly by Sam Spiegel, who notched seven saves, to bring his Crossroads-League-leading total to 49.

After an end-to-end start with four shots in six minutes, the Trojans opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Sawyer Watterson came close, rocketing a shot off the crossbar before Pablo Gonzalez controlled the rebound and fired an inch-perfect shot into the bottom corner to put Taylor up 1-0. Gonzalez is now tied for the team lead in goals with three, after scoring twice a year ago.

The end-to-end match continued as both teams played quick on the counterattack, providing plenty of opportunities for each squad to threaten but nothing more came of it, with a 1-0 score at halftime.

TU came out with even more vigor in the second half, launching 17 shots compared to just five for the Foresters.

The crossbar continued to be a good omen for Taylor, striking it again in the 69th minute. On the ensuing corner, Matt Harrold tapped in from a cross by Jhon Alzate to make it 2-0. The goal was Harrold’s first goal for Taylor in his collegiate career after notching his first assist early this season.

The Trojans continued to control the match and got yet another goal in the 87th minute. Brian Matipa got a pass around midfield and began a run through multiple Forester defenders leaving them behind on his way to the box, where he blasted a shot into the bottom-left corner to complete the scoring at 3-0.

The TU attack was balanced throughout the evening, having eight different players take multiple shots and hitting the crossbar twice to go along with the three magnificent goals.

Taylor returns to action Saturday, October 1, in Turner Stadium to play cross-county rival No. 21 Indiana Wesleyan (7-2-2, 1-1-0) in Crossroads League action, with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.
