Trojans Cruise to 11-1 Win Over Saint Ambrose
UPLAND, Ind. – Matt Patton turned in a dominant start on the hill and the TU sticks pounded out 11 runs on 15 hits, highlighted by homers from Brett Lawson and Wyatt Whitman in an 11-1 victory over Saint Ambrose in Saturday’s lone contest at Winterholter Field.
The Trojans scored in each of the first three innings to support Patton and blew the game open with a five-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. The Trojans sent six-straight batters to the plate and got a three-run blast from Lawson and a two-run shot from Whitman to put the game out of reach.
Patton (3-0) set the tone for the contest, using only 51 pitches to complete five dominant innings and earn the win. The senior allowed an unearned run in the first and racked up seven strikeouts, while allowing only two hits.
Tucker Waddups and Brenden Bube followed with four scoreless innings out of the pen, as the trio of Trojan hurlers combined for 12 strikeouts in the game, while allowing zero earned runs, no walks and just five hits.
Whitman sparked the lineup from the leadoff slot, collecting three hits, while scoring twice and driving in two on the home run. Jared Adkins also had a two-hit game and scored twice, while Andrew Kennedy went 2-3 with two RBI and Lawson was 2-5 with the dinger and four runs batted in.
Taylor (6-4) will be back in action on February 23 and 24, when it hosts IU-South Bend (0-1) for a 2:00 pm doubleheader on Friday and a 1:00 pm twinbill on Saturday.
