TROJANS FALL TO PAIR OF RANKED OPPONENTS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Taylor volleyball team fell to a pair of ranked opponents during the opening day of play at the ACC tournament hosted by Cornerstone on Friday.

Taylor (16-12, 7-7) pushed No. 16 Madonna by splitting the first two sets with the Crusaders as the Trojans rallied for an epic 35-33 win in the second set to even the match at one set apiece. However, that would be the only set TU would win on the day as Madonna collected a pair of wins (25-18, 25-17) to close out the match before Taylor was swept by No. 18 Cornerstone.

Senior Becca Gerig led the Trojans against Madonna with 12 kills while Kayla Springer added 11 and Addy Bailey tallied ten in TU’s opening match. Harrell dished out 31 assists against the Crusaders while Abby DeSimpelare added 17 helpers. Senior Laura Craig added a career-high 27 digs for the TU defense while Harrell added 15 digs.

The Trojans got off to a horrid start in their second match as the hosts from Cornerstone rolled to a 25-4 win in the opening set and never allowed TU to completely find its rhythm as Cornerstone won set two 25-21 and closed out the match with a 25-17 victory.

Sophomore Amanda Adams paced the TU attack in the nightcap with eight kills while Julia Pomerenke added six terminations. Harrell tallied 12 assists while DeSimpelare added 11 helpers for TU and Craig added 12 digs.

Taylor returns to action on Saturday with a pair of matches to close out the weekend. The Trojans take on #RV Siena Heights at 10:00 am and close out the weekend with a match up with Northwestern Ohio at 1:00 pm.
