Trojans Fend Off Bethel on Senior Night

UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor (15-16, 8-8 CL) nabbed the victory on Wednesday’s senior night, defeating the Pilots in a five set nail-biter. The league victory now has TU slotted fifth in the Crossroads League.

The Trojans got off to a hot start, leading for the majority of the first set. The team secured the set with a six-point run helped by a pair of kills from Julia Pomerenke and Amanda Adams.

Bethel (10-17, 5-10 CL) found its footing, taking the second and third sets. The Pilots used a six-point rally of their own to solidify their advantage in the second set, tying the match at 1-1. The third set was a back and forth affair that included 16 different tie scores, as neither team could gain separation. Despite five kills from both Adams and Ryan Czerniak, Bethel came out on top by a mere two points.

With the pressure mounting, the Purple and Gold rose to the occasion, winning back-to-back sets to take the match. Taylor jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set and held onto the advantage, despite Bethel’s best comeback efforts. Haley Harrell made sure to force a fifth set, logging 16 assists in the fourth set. In the fifth set, the two teams were tied with the score resting at 11-11. As Odle shook with excitement, TU rattled off four-consecutive points, capping the night off with a Czerniak kill.

Taylor’s offense came from multiple sources, as four different Trojans tallied double-digit kills. The team as a whole slammed 68 kills for the match, including 18 in both the third and fourth sets. Freshman Ryan Czerniak set a career-high with 20 kills on the night, while also finishing with a .405 hitting percentage. Pomerenke was another efficient attacker, posting a .519 hitting percentage to go along with her 15 kills. Haley Harrell was at the center of the TU attack, posting her second 50-assist effort of the season, tallying 52 on the night

As the team celebrated senior night, the three seniors stepped up on defense for the team. Haley Harrell and Jamie Scherb covered the back row, picking up 19 digs apiece. Addy Bailey was a force at the net, collecting four block assists.
