Trojans Split Doubleheader with Huntington
Â
UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor and Huntington (14-24, 10-18 CL) braved the cold and mildly wet conditions on Saturday for a Crossroads League doubleheader. TU won the first game 3-2 and fell 9-3 in the second game.
Game one provided limited scoring for both teams. Taylor took control in the second inning, as Hannah Castor hit a solo home run over the center field fence. The home run was Castor’s sixth of the season.
After the Foresters scored two runs in the top of the fourth, the Trojans answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the same inning.
Moriarty scored to tie the game up at two runs each. Maddi Evans scored the game-winning run off of Erin Cozad’s double to deep left-center
Jessica Doctor (11-7) only gave up two runs on six hits during seven innings of work. Doctor finished the game with seven strikeouts and the win.
The Trojans scored their three runs on seven hits.
Courtney Moriarty hit a home run in the bottom of the first to get things started for the Trojans in game two. Taylor would score once more in the bottom of the first when Taylor Wilson scored on Castor’s triple.
After trailing 7-2, the Trojans made an effort to come back in the bottom of the fifth. Kara Tucker brought in Olivia Hostetler. The run would be too little too late for the Trojans, as Huntington picked up the win in game two, 9-3.
Moriarty, Castor and Tucker finished game two with one RBI each.
Taylor was originally going to play St. Francis (23-19, 14-13 CL) on Saturday but due to incoming inclement weather, the doubleheader will now be played on April 24. Game one against the Cougars will begin at 3:00 pm.
The Trojans (29-11, 21-7 CL) will host Bethel (12-28, 7-21 CL) on April 23 at Gudakunst Field. Game on will begin at 4:00 pm.
