Trojans Split Non-League Doubleheader with Saints

UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor took a quick break from Crossroads League play on Monday afternoon, hosting Aquinas for a pair of games at Winterholter Field and falling 6-4 in the first game before securing a 9-2 victory in the finale.

Nathan Targgart highlighted the offense with six hits in eight trips to the dish over the two games, collecting two doubles and driving in five. Sam Wiese belted a three-run homer among his three hits and scored three times and Jared Adkins added three more runs to his Crossroads League-leading season total.

Brian Fields and Clay Riggins each tossed three scoreless innings out of the pen, while Zak Eckerle notched a win in his game-two start.

Aquinas (18-20) kept the TU bats at bay in the opener, holding the Trojans to five hits and two earned runs over the seven innings. Targgart doubled twice in the game and picked up three RBIs to lead the offense.

The bats bounced back in the nightcap, striking for three runs in each of the first three innings for a 9-0 lead and cruised to the 9-2 win. Targgart collected four more hits in the victory, while Wiese went 3-4 with a dinger. Adkins and Trevor Booth each scored twice.

Eckerle (1-1) went four innings in the start for the win, allowing two runs on six hits, before turning the ball over the Fields who finished the contest for his first save. Fields allowed one hit over three scoreless frames and fanned three batters.

Taylor (28-15, 16-4 CL) will return to league play on Wednesday at 3:00 pm when it plays at Goshen (21-22, 9-11 CL).
