UPLAND, Ind. – The TU softball team swept the season series with Spring Arbor on Thursday night at Gudakunst Field, posting a 12-1 win in five innings in game one and a 9-6 victory in game two.
The first outing was dominated by Taylor, scoring 12 runs on 13 hits in just four trips to the plate to secure the 500th win in program history.
Cassie Kuizin, Courtney Moriarty, Davis Carter and Taylor Wilson each collected a pair of hits, with Kuizin, Carter and Wilson each adding two runs batted in. Lauren Kanai blasted a solo home run and Olivia Hostetler contributed a two-RBI triple to the cause.
Darby Shaw (6-3) picked up her sixth win of the season in the circle, scattering four hits and allowing just one run and one walk, while striking out three in four innings of work.
Game two was on its way to mirroring the first contest through three innings, as the Trojans built up a 5-0 lead, behind Hannah Castor’s grand slam and Carter’s solo shot in the third frame.
However, Spring Arbor (14-20, 8-14 CL) belted a pair of solo home runs in the fourth and tallied three more runs in the fifth to knot the score at 5-5 entering the bottom of the fifth.
Kanai put the Trojans back in front with one swing of the bat in the home-half of the stanza, as the freshman deposited a 1-0 pitch over the left-field fence for a two-run dinger.
An RBI double from the Cougars in the top of the sixth made it 7-6 in favor of the Purple and Gold, but a pair of SAU errors in the bottom-half allowed Taylor to tack on two more scores to make the final tally.
Jessica Doctor (1-0) earned her first-career win on the rubber for TU, and Moriarty recorded her Crossroads League-leading third save of the spring in the nightcap.
Carter ended the second game 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two runs scored and a run batted in, while Kara Tucker and Wilson each went 2-for-4 at the dish.
Taylor (16-8, 10-6 CL) is next scheduled to travel to Huntington (15-12, 10-7 CL) for two contests against the Foresters on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
