TU Picks Up Ninth-Straight CL Win to Sweep Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. – Taylor waited out a 90-minute weather delay on Wednesday afternoon, before completing a season sweep of Goshen amid intermittent rain showers throughout a soggy 5-2 victory. The series sweep was the third of league play for the Trojans this season.

TU never trailed in the any of the three games at Goshen and rode a 4-0 start in Wednesday’s finale to the win. The scoring opened in the third, after Brian Fields roped a one-out double and later scored on a run-scoring ground out off the bat of Tanner Watson.

Sam Wiese scored on an Andrew Kennedy single in the fourth for a 2-0 cushion and Taylor used sacrifice flies from Nathan Targgart and Wiese for two runs without the aid of a hit in the fourth to open the four-run gap.

Goshen (21-23, 9-12 CL) countered with single tallies in the fifth and sixth but Targgart doubled in the seventh and Wiese plated pinch-running Trevor Booth with an RBI single to close the scoring at 5-2.

Matt Patton worked the final 3.1 innings of the contest to hammer down his first win of the season. The junior needed only 41 pitches to pick up the final 13 outs, allowing only two hits and one walk, while fanning three.

Patton finished off the game that was started by Kennedy throwing the first 4.1 frames. The freshman yielded one run on four hits, firing 58 pitches before being followed by Brett Lawson and Rob Fox.

Fields doubled and scored twice to lead the TU offense, with Wiese collecting one hit, scoring once and driving in two. Kennedy also hit safely twice and had one RBI in addition to his work on the bump.

Taylor (29-15, 17-4 CL) will now turn its focus toward a weekend showdown with No. 24 Huntington (24-8, 17-3 CL) at Winterholter Field with first place in the Crossroads League standings on the line. The critical three-game set is slated to begin with a nine-inning affair on Friday at 6:00 pm, with a Saturday doubleheader set for a 2:00 pm start.
