Turnovers Sink RV Trojans at Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – A Saturday matchup got away from RV Taylor (15-4, 8-3 CL), as the squad fell, 76-66, against the Huntington Foresters (7-6, 4-5 CL). The loss marked the end of a nine-game winning streak for TU dating back to December 9.

The Trojans struggled to get their offense going in the road contest, giving up six turnovers in the first quarter. The TU squad managed just 10 points with a 28.6 field goal percentage, as they fell behind by 14 points.

The Foresters pushed their advantage to a game-high 19 points in the midst of the second stanza. Kayla Kirtley and Lauren James combined for eight points to finish off the first half, cutting the deficit with an 8-2 rally.

The momentum stayed in TU’s favor after the halftime break, as the Purple and Gold scored the first five points coming out of the locker room. In the third quarter, the Trojans went eight-for-11 from the field, while outrebounding HU, 10-4. A 23-point quarter for TU slimmed the Huntington lead to 52-48, heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

With nine minutes left in the contest, Kirtley brought the Trojans within three points with a free throw. The Foresters responded with a 13-4 run, securing the upset win over the visiting Trojans.

16 turnovers by Taylor crippled the TU offense on Saturday. The double-digit giveaways led to 10 points for the Foresters.

The TU squad also struggled from the free throw line, going 15-22 from the charity stripe to convert at a 68.2 percent clip.

Kirtley offered a standout performance with her third double-double of the season. The junior forward collected 16 points with three offensive boards and 10 total rebounds.

The leader of the scoring column for TU was Lauren James who compiled 18 points on the afternoon. James shot 75.0 percent from the floor, while making all four attempts from beyond the arc.

Taylor Westgate nabbed her third-straight double-digit scoring effort, notching 16 points and six rebounds. Madisyn Fischer surpassed 10 points as well for the Trojans, grabbing 12 points with six field goals and four rebounds.
