Maryland leads the men at No. 1, with the Penn State women ranked No. 6
ROSEMONT, Ill. — Ten Big Ten schools, five men’s and five women’s, were ranked in the top 25 or received votes in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll. After winning the NCAA men’s national title in 2018, Maryland comes into the season ranked No. 1. The Penn State women’s team leads Big Ten competitors, ranking sixth after earning the Big Ten crown last season.
All three Big Ten teams that made it to the 2018 NCAA Men’s College Cup are ranked in the top 10 with Maryland at No. 1, Indiana directly behind at No. 2 and Michigan State at No. 7. Michigan was ranked 24th in the preseason poll and Wisconsin received 13 votes.
Along with Penn State on the women’s side, Wisconsin was ranked No. 16 and 2018 Big Ten Tournament champion Minnesota received 33 votes. Rutgers (29) and Ohio State (1) also received votes.
The Big Ten soccer season is set to begin with the women kicking off on Aug. 22. The men will follow on Aug. 30 with a slew of nonconference games.
