Valpo Football Names Week 3 Team Honorees

The Valparaiso University football program announced its team honors for Week 3 of the season following Saturday’s game against Ivy League foe Dartmouth at Brown Field.

Senior Robert Washington (Huntersville, N.C. / East Gaston [Old Dominion]) was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Week, defensive lineman Austin Martins (Newman, Calif. / Orestimba [Modesto JC]) was tabbed the squad’s Defensive Player of the Week and Brett Bittner (Chicago, Ill. / St. Laurence) took Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

In addition, freshman tight end Evan Jernegan (Altadena, Calif. / St. Francis) was named the Scout Team Offensive Player of the Week, freshman linebacker Hayden Bedell (Orland Park, Ill. / Carl Sandburg) was the Scout Team Defensive Player of the Week and freshman wide receiver Dom Grguric (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) earned Scout Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.

Washington rushed for a season-high 117 yards, the fifth 100-yard rushing game of his Valpo career. He also completed a successful two-point conversion pass following a Valpo touchdown. In addition, the reigning Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Year shared the team lead with four receptions.

Martins, who boasted a pair of fourth-quarter fumble recoveries, also earned College Sports Madness PFL Defensive Player of the Week recognition after Saturday’s performance. The fumble recoveries were the first of Martins’ collegiate career as he accomplished the rare feat of recovering two fumbles in a single game (and in this case, in a single quarter). He played a key role in a strong defensive effort that featured two safeties and three takeaways. Martins posted a career-high six tackles including five solos and contributed ½ sack.

Bittner earned the special teams honor after blocking a Dartmouth punt in the second quarter.

After a 28-18 setback to the defending Ivy League champions, Valpo will kick off PFL play on Saturday at noon at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. The game will air on ESPN3.
